Every week we will have a new blog. I will post the topic on Monday, and your entry will be due no later than midnight of the following Sunday. No blog entered after 12:00am will be accepted.
For this first week's topic, write about why you are taking Humanities. What do you expect to learn from the class? What are your plans for next year? How will Humanities help you reach your goals?
We have a very exciting line up of performances this year. We will attend one performance of the symphony, five operas, two plays, and two ballets. I've chosen each one because it has literary and artistic merit and because it is a recognized "classic." I very much look forward to sharing my knowledge and experience with you, and I look forward also to learning from you. Let's make this the best year ever, after all it is your last year of high school. I feel privileged to be able to share it with you. --Mr. S

Humanities is a way for me to take English while still enjoying it because of theatre. Being able to understand difficult pieces can take several trips to the opera house, theatre, or hall, allowing time in class to study the separate pieces before and after seeing the performances makes it easier on my wallet, plus I’ll get more out of the experience. Taking humanities can teach me how to look at pieces in theatre more closely preparing me for college theatre studies. Next year I want to attend any college with a decent drama program, so, taking this class will most likely narrow my studies. I don’t see opera or ballet in my future quite yet.

Humanitites has always interested me as a student and also as a member of our own Woodinville High School Drama deparmtent. I started drama my second semester of sophomore year as an elective for fine arts credit and fell in love with it. I began going to shows and helping with productions and enjoyed the experiences so much that I am now construction head for sets and I attend many shows put on professionally and by other high schools. I guess theatre is my home and I wanted to enrich my life with something other than plays and musicals. I read the course description for humanities in junior year and decided there I would take the class senior year. Here I am now and I am very excited to see ballets and operas. Even with all the shows I have seen, this style of production is something new for me. I don't think I would ever go to the opera or ballet without someone to go with and because it is the entire class, humanities, drew my interest. By viewing these productions I hope to learn, but more so hear, the many different tones and styles of operas. From ballet, I hope to study choreography and apply it to WHS theatre. Because some of these preformances were written way before my time I wish to take notice and acknowledge differences from my perceptions of pieces composed in those time periods. In the class itself my goal is to become more familiar with operas, plays, and ballets and not only their origins but also their content. My goals for next year are to go on to college and persue engineering of some sort and minor in something dealing with drama. Backstage crew is good or maybe even something with set building. Humanities will inspire me even more to minor in theatre. As of right now it is something I fully enjoy but I feel I am clueless when it comes to the many many many shows I have not seen or even heard about. Familiarity with shows and ballets and operas are what I believe is key for me in succeeding with my goals of persuing theatre.

Originally i wasn's going to take an english class, or at least not for a full year. One of the reasons being I dont enjoy english very much. But, i thought it would benefit me to take an english class since its my weakness and I thought humanities would be a fun choice because of the plays we get to go to. I expect to learn more about the arts in this class and not so much of the essay writing that I dislike. My plans for next year are to go to college, not quite sure where yet, but somewhere along the way i will have to write some sort of college essay and taking an english class such as this one has already helped me because of the book we read over summer for the summer assignment. The knowledge i will gain from this class will help in some way shape or form, better than taking an early dismissal for a semester in my mind.
i am very excited to be taking humanities class this year. i am hoping i will get alot out of it that will soon help me in the future and get me closer to what i am wanting to become when i'm older. from this class i am expecting to learn how to look at plays, ballets, and operas, alot more closely than i have in the past. i am hoping to learn alot about the performances we are going to see, and i am also hoping to learn about the different types of ballets and operas that are out there that i am not aware of yet. my plans for next year are to attent a college of the arts, and soon becoming a choreographer, or even a dance teacher. humanities will help me reach these goals because i am learning alot about everything i need to know for my future. it will hopefully help me understand the complexity and details of ballets and operas, and all the extra components that go into the productions that i am unaware of right now. i also will learn alot about choreography just from watching these performances. i will see what looks good and what doesn't, as well as formations and placing that look good too. i am hoping to get ideas in my head of chorepgraphy and i am also hoping this will open my eyes a little more to see all the different kinds of dancing, formations, and everything else that there is so i can try some of my own.

When I decided to take humanities it sounded like a fun new experience going to operas and plays. I have only been to a couple plays and the closest I’ve come to opera is the commercial where they all sing “877 cash now” so I would say I don’t have much experience with performing arts. I expect to find out what it is that people seem to love about operas. Next year I plan to attend a college with a good photography program. Taking this class might look good as a fourth year of English and will show my interests in different art forms but mainly it will help me more personally than it will help me get to where I want to go career wise.
The way I found Humanities was by reading through the pamphlet of classes at Woodinville High School. As soon as I did, I knew I wanted to take it and that it would probably be one of my favorite classes. The reason I wanted to take this class is because I really love live performances like plays, operas, symphonies and things like that, but I haven’t had the chance to see very many. By taking this class I expect to learn to understand the performances more by discussing them and to get more out of them than by just going on my own. My primary interest in school is history, and since the theater has played a very import role in the past, I think this class will help me understand more the periods in time that I’m studying. I’m very excited to be taking this class especially since I’m just a sophomore.
I really look forward to be able to go to operas with my friends. I really like being able to see what other people think about theatre and hearing their views and opinions to see if they are similar or share any of the same thoughts as me. I have never been very involved with the arts and I saw this class as a great oppurtinity to give it a try and study it in school. Also, my sister was super involved with every type of dance, and ballet was one of her favorites (she is studying it and is continuing her dance career in the heart of NYC) so I look forward to being able to have an idea of what she is interested in and why she loves it so much. Along with Andrew I am taking the tech theatre class for my first year and i also hope to be able to use some of the things i see and apply them to the class. I look forward to the year and if anyone would like to carpool to the operas etc. just let me know : )
I decieded to take humanities because it is an english class but seems very differnt than the traditional english i have been taking. i wanted to switch it up a bit for my senior year and i think experiencing plays and operas is a good way. this will all be a somewhat new experience for me since i have only been to the nutcracker and look forward to learning alot about what i dont know much about. thank you for the opportunity to take your class and i hope it is a great year.

The reason I am taking Humanities is because I like to learn things in different ways. English is one of my favorite subjects and so is art and when you put the two together its simply amazing and I'm really looking forward to seeing how the year plays out and exactly what the class is about. The things I expect to learn from the class are a better understanding for English taught through art-form and how to recognize the underlying themes in a play instead of viewing them black and white on paper. My plans for next year are either to apply to the Seattle Art Institute for graphic design or to take a mix of classes there or I will travel to New York to study with my uncle Jim Hodges who is a famous artist and see what I can learn from him. Humanities will help me reach my goals because the more art I understand the better artist I will be and if I can watch movement as an art-form I might learn to draw or paint it better because I know what it really looks like. Also in ballet people express their emotions with their bodies and if I can learn to recognize I can learn to draw or paint it out as well without even making actual people, they could just be silhouettes.

I chose to take humanities because I enjoy the arts and would like to be able to incorporate them into my education. I was on the Honors/Pre-AP/AP route but decided that I should do something that i'm genuinely interested in and that is by my choice, not just taking a course because it's what I had planned on taking and looks best on my college application. I've always been interested in operas (last year I joined in on "Pagliacci" and loved it), theatre, ballet, and music and figured that these activities could be even more interesting to me if I knew the background knowledge on what I am seeing, which seems to be the general purpose of humanities.I am quickly seeing that this will probably be my favorite class, and appeals to me the most. In college I would like to incorporate humanities into my curriculum, and being that I have no idea what I want my major to be I think that it is a good opprotunity to try out new things. Also, it seems like the only way to see that many shows, for that cheap. I am constantly trying to be more culturally involved and going to these programs, and learning about the history of them does not only interest me personally but is good common knowledge to carry with you in college and in life.
Rosie Polaschek, Period 4
I chose to take Humanities because the class sounded like it was something a little different - It's definitely not like anything that's offered to us in New Zealand! Woodinville High has a range of really interesting sounding classes, things that are different from the standard Maths, or English and Science, which are pretty much the basics that (with a few variations, like Drama!), are all I get offered at home.
I'm going back to New Zealand for my last year of school next year and most of my courses at Woodinville I had to take to meet pre-requisites back there. I chose Humanities as one of my classes that I personally was actually interested in.
I'm involved in a lot of drama and theatre type things, and I thought this would be a good opportunity to learn a bit about the "classics" of all the different genres we're covering, to improve my general knowledge of opera etc, which is definitely kinda patchy! I also thought Humanities would help me to get out and see a bit more of the Seattle area, to go and see places I might not otherwise have got to.
I took humanities this year because i go to see plays with my parents a lot and i really enjoy them. Humanities is a way i can take english but still study something i am interested in. I like the fact that we are going to learn about the plays before we go see them so that we understand what they are about before we go. I think the history of arts is also really intriguing. I like learning about the way people came up with the ideas they did to create the shows. i anticipate to learn a lot bout the shows we are gong to see and i can't wait to attend them. They seem very interesting and i just expect to have more knowledge on the art of operas, ballets, and etc. I also like studying the arts of different time periods and I'm glad that we have a variety of time periods that we are studying. Another thing I'm excited for is to be seeing operas because i have never been to one before. It will be a new experience for me and i can't wait. My plans for the future consist of going to college and getting as much education as possible. I'd like to take other classes about the arts there as well because i find it very interesting. An option of one day going into the arts myself. I think that humanities will really help me because i will have further knowledge about the arts and get to further experience by going to see a variety of different shows that have different genres. Taking humanities can give me a small stable background on the arts so that i can actually know what I'm talking about now. So, I am really excited to be taking it this year and getting this experience, i can't wait!
Actually I did not know there was choices for English class. Last year, when I heard about I can take English class for humanities, I was so happy. Because I like to go and watch play and Opera. I did not like that things before, but one of my father's friend is Opera singer (I don't know what that call). So my family and I went to Opera few times. After that I like to go and watch something. It is fun and new experince to me. I also does not like English class before, but this class will make me enjoy in English class. Lastly, I decided to my college major to industrial design. I believe experince more and have fun in this class, it will help me a lot.
I wanted to take humanities this year because of the great opportunities that it will offer me to see many different artistic performances. During my sophomore year I attended two of these operas and had a really fun time so I guess I had been planning on taking the class since then. I had a lot of fun seeing those operas then even though I didn’t know anything about them and I am excited to enjoy them even more thoroughly this year after we study them before hand. I would like this class to teach me about the plays/operas/ballets so that I am able to better understand what is going on and thus better enjoy the production. Next year I plan on going to a four year college. I am not sure yet where exactly, but I am looking at both schools in California as well as the University of Washington. I think that humanities will help me become a more rounded person. Learning about the arts is something I have never really looked into and this will be the perfect chance to do that. Also, I really like that humanities will give me the chance to read different material and then look and see how others are expressing that physically. If you can bring a story to life then you are really doing what the author meant for you to do. Sometimes just reading a book isn't enough to really appriciate it and I am going to love going and phsyically seeing the operas.
Cristina Rice period 2
I decided to take this class because first of all a lot of seniors last year said this was a fun class and I should take it. Also I enjoy plays a lot even though I haven't been to many. This gave me a chance to see more and probably understand them more also. I have never seen a opra before either so I'm excited for the new experience. Next year I plan to go to college. I am really looking at Central University and want to study health care. I love helping people and I also like science and math. Humanities isn't exactly what I plan on studying but you never know I may love this class and decide to go on this path. I choose this class because I wanted to try something different so I know exactly what I do and don't like.
Honestly, the reason that I took humanities is because I wanted another English credit, and heard the class was a blast--not like other English classes. Also, College Prep sounded like every other English class that I have ever had. With humanities, I will most likely be interested in whatever we are doing at the time, because going to see the operas and such keeps it fresh. I also like how we don't study one book for like... 3 months. Plus, found this online, and it seems intriguing... "In the humanities we study the various ways we as humans have tried to answer our questions about the meaning of our world and our existence." So for another year of English, humanities seemed best. My plans for next year are to go to UW or WWU. Humanities will help me reach my goal of becoming a teacher because it will open up my mind, while getting the credits I would like to enter college.
The reason why I am taking Humanities is because I am in some ways an art freak (but in a good way). I am in jazz band, wind ensemble, marching band, drama, drama plays and production, and an outside touring choir, Columbia Choirs. I love performing in the arts and also sitting back and enjoying other people's art. Although I am so involved in the arts I have never seen an opera and I am very excited about seeing it for the first time. I expect to learn how to interpret plays, operas, and performances of all kinds in a more detailed way. My goal is to be a High School band and choral director. This class will help my prepare for being a director by helping me appreciate the arts more (if thats possible) and learn more about the different types of art and bring that to college with me.
I wanted to take humanities because I was interested in the way english was taught through opera and art. My brother took humanities and told me how fun all the operas and such were, so I'm especially excited for that. I hope to learn about the different era's of art and about different styles of plays and operas. The reason I'm taking humanities is also for general life knowledge, which includes the arts. Next year I am applying to University of Washington Bothell, then transferring to Washington State University and hopefully I'll know what major I want to do, and hopefully humanities will help me further in my life.

I took Humanities because for one I wanted another english credit and I was getting tired of reading book after book and answering questions. When someone told me about humanities it sounded more exciting to go see the things we read. Also I've enjoyed attending plays in the past and I have been wanting to see an opera, so I signed up for Humanities. I hope to learn how differnet cultures see the world through different peoples writings. Because each author came from a differnt time and culture each performance will have differnt types of costumes and ways of speaking. Next year I would like to go to BCC or Alaska State University. If I end up taking a year off, I will most likely go to London to study or travel around Egland. Hopefully I will be able to atted a college that will allow me to study abroad. Humanities will help me to understand more of the past and I will hopefully gain a new respect for each diverse culture. This will help me in my travels and make me a more rounded person.
I chose to take humanities because it offered the unique opportunity to see many different types of theater without having to pay quite a bit and honestly I wouldn't know which ones to see anyway. I am also taking AP English first period but I had heard such great things about humanities from students who took it last year that I thought it would be worth it to take two englishes. It also gives me the help I want on my college essay that we don't go into as much in AP. I am looking forward to this year and heard that humanites and AP compliment each other well. I'm not sure quite what to expect yet as far as the theater goes, but I'm looking forward to experiencing a different side of Seattle I would normally not have delved into.
Chris Hong Period 6 September 4, 2008
i am so sick and tired of all these same old english classes. it felt like every year since like the 8th grade english was the same. for example, just reading books and writting couple of essays a year and maybe talking about a poem for a little bit. this is exactley why i took humanities this year. i wanted to experience something diffrent and something that will actually intrest me. english was always a subject that i did not enjoy much. class could be fun pertaining to students and teachers. however, i did not like writting essays or just reading books thats got 30 diffrent symbolisms in it. i believe this humanity class will bring books with actuall story lines that i can enjoy. i am really looking forward to going to all these plays. i expect to expand my knowledge towards art and be able to apprishiate them. next year i plan to attend a 4 year university where i can study bioengineering and experience the bigger world. i am very excited for it. i think this class is going to be really fun and i am looking forward to it.
I'm taking humanities for two reasons. One is that I enjoy English, but there are few teachers who seem ecstatic about their classes, making the classes boring and uninteresting. The other reason is for the arts, preforming and non, I am happy to learn more and confuse my dad in what he usually knows best.
I truthfully am not sure what I'm going to learn from this class, but so far I can tell that whatever I learn will be intense and hilarious.
My plans for this next year are to pull myself together, learn and show who I am and who I want to be, and have fun with it. Rather than be stressing over each and every day, assignment, and event.
There are five things that make me feel complete: family, friends, animals, music, and art. My future career(s)will be based on these five things, and this class covers two to three of them. I think that's a good start to reaching my goals.
This year I decided to take humanities as a plain high school english alternative, because I didn't want just that: Plain high school english. Humanities provided a way to get involved in the arts, to help refresh the Art History course I took previously, as well as a way to creatively and thoughtfully write and reflect on everything I've learned in this class. From this class I plan to learn how to be theatre savvy as well as build my base of literary knowledge with the plays and the history that goes along with them and their time periods. My plans for next year include college, hopefully a four year with my current goals. Humanities will help me reach my goals by giving me a vibrant artistic english environment and keeping me fresh in analytical reading and writing, yet not shoving book after contemporary english book down my throat. Overall I am excited for this class and all the opportunities which it holds for me.

When it came to choosing an english 12 class there was really never any question as to what I would take. I’m comfortable enough with my essay writing skills to take a break for this year and experience something new. I’m relatively interested in pursuing some type of humanities in college so I decided taking this class would be an appropriate introduction to the subject. I'm not exactly sure what I plan to study in college, but I plan on taking some humanities and philosophy classes regardless of what I choose to major in. I’m extremely interested in art as well, including performing arts, so I’m excited to attend the performances above all else. I am especially eager too see the ballets because I experiencing a story being told through movement rather than words is a completely different experience. I have been going to plays since I was young with my parents but have never had the opportunity to go to an opera and probably never would have I had not enrolled in this class. I think that attending the performances and studying the material behind them will open my eyes to a new area of art that I never would have known otherwise.

I love dance, art and theatre and so I obviously chose to take humanities! My modern dance teacher always tells us to see as much art as we possibly can so that we "take that knowledge and grow as artists and individuals, and use it to express ourselves through dance so we aren't just empty vessels." She's really likes to give speeches like that. So hopefully I'll get to see and experience loads of art that I'm not used to seeing very often, and learn about the ideas that went into it all. Next year I think I'll keep dancing at Pacific Northwest Ballet as a Professional Division student and take a few college classes. I suppose humanities will help me bring more personality and artistry to my dancing, like my modern teacher says. And hopefully that will help me become an actual professional ballerina someday.
I am taking Humanities because I've been around theater almost my entire life. I love everything about what goes into productions and I thought this class would be a perfect way to learn more about them. I expect to learn much more about the culture that goes into these different styles of productions. Except for one or two shows at 5th Avenue, I've only ever seen school plays. Next year I hope to work towards my goals of working in the arts, such as photography and painting. Humanities will help me reach my goals because theater photography is a career option I've been thinking about. Being able to experience so many productions will give me more experience with how they are performed and how to spot important moments.

I expect to learn more about Operas symphonies and ballets by taking Humanities. I have been involved in theatre since I was in second grade. I began doing church musicals. I have been taking a drama class at school for about 5 years and I love it. I have always had a love for theatre but at a disadvantage because I haven’t had to opportunity to see shows. Next year I plan on starting off at a community college for a few years and then transferring to a University- it is much cheaper that way. I would love to study drama. If that doesn't work out I have thought about going to Beauty School to cut hair. I still have many options; I just have to decide was route I want to take. Humanities will help me reach my goals because I want to study drama in college. This year in Humanities will give me the building blocks I need to continue my career as an actress.
I am taking Humanities instead of Debate or Creative Writing, since I planned to take an english class regardless, almost entirely for the "humanities" aspect of it rather than the english part. That is, the operas plays and ballets. Having already taken english almost every year of school, I was excited to find a class that allowed me to learn about other things than just sentence forming and grammer. Last year I attended one opera after buying a spare ticket from a classmate, Pagliacci, and enjoyed it immensely. This year I look forward to seeing many more.
Whoops- Followup to Part one of my comment. I accidently clicked submit before I had finished posting.
My goals for next year actually dont include english for the most part, I am actually interested in some form of medical school or studies. Still, with the basics learned from this class, I truely hope to continue a love for and attendance of operas, plays, and ballets. From the class I expect to learn terminology and specifics that will not only help me understand the finer arts, but have a greater appreciation for them.
Jordan Adam - Per. 4
I’m taking Humanities because I’m tired of endless written literature analysis assignments I don’t care enough about. Previous English classes, though not all bad, involve a lot of examining one book in endless, repetitive, repeating repetition, which I’m no longer very fond of. Writing about how an arbitrary item or description of a setting has a deep overarching meaning has lost its appeal now that I’ve done it so much. It might be interesting that Holden Caulfield could be considered a Christ figure, but it’s not interesting enough that I want to write essays about it. Every other English class option for my senior year, College Prep; AP English; Debate; etc, all either promised writing more dry literature essays or weren’t interesting enough. From what I’d heard, Humanities was hands-down the most fun English class I could sign up for, and fun English was precisely what I was after. What with no more literature essays, getting to watch stage theater shows, and the promise of a good time, joining a Humanities class seemed like my best option. Plus I’m part of Woodinville’s Drama program, so not only do all the shows interest me already, but I can review some as an Advanced Drama assignment (bonus!). As for my future, I don’t know how or if Humanities will affect me post-high school. This class is about me pursuing my interests, and hopefully having a bunch of fun at the same time. Even if Humanities won’t change my career, my college work, or my future in any momentous way, if nothing else, I might as well take the class now. Because if I ever decide I want to learn about Humanities later, colleges will probably charge me thousands of dollars for my change of heart. Might as well learn while the learning’s good, right?
PS - Oh, this comment's probably way too long, huh? My bad.
Chanelle Herrera. Period 4.
I am taking Humanities because I know I wanted another year of english but Im not one for writting essays and reasing books about things I dont care about. I love watching plays as I have been doing with my family occasionally throughout the year since I was a little girl. Im hoping that from being in this class, I will learn more about the things like plays and operas and such and I am very excited to go see them. Im also hoping to get a greater appreciation for them.
My plans for next year and the future actually dont include anything to do with english. I plan to ellist in the navy, and then from there go to a business school. So I know that taking humanties wont really help me a lot with that but I think that it will just definately be a fun class for me to enjoy in my final year of high school.
Gabe Gonzalez Period 2 Sept. 7
I became interested in taking humanities from the idea of going to see theatre with my friends and classmates. It really seemed like a much more enjoyable way to pick up an English credit than in a more traditional writing class, and it was highly recommended by previous classes. This year I expect to greatly improve my writing in preparation for college, while also learning a great deal about the arts and the world of theatre. Humanities will be able to help my writing through our work with college essays, and the blogs and works we will be writing on theatre, a topic I am not so familiar with. Being able to study the arts as well as English should make this a very enjoyable class, and I am very excited for the first show we have coming up.
When I herd about humanities I knew immediately it was just what i needed in an English class. I’ve never been good at writing and I don’t like reading pointless books, but the one part of English that has always interested me was script and play studies. This year I hope to learn about modern and classical theater and opera as well as how to study a piece of theater. Next year I am planning to go into college for technical theater in college so humanities seemed like the best choice for that major.
The reason that I took Humanities was for an extra year of English. Also the theatre is something I'm not used to so I figured that I only live once so I might as well see something I haven’t before. I expect to see a different idea of what people think is good work. I also expect to learn more about plays and their meanings instead of what appears to be on the surface. My plans for next year as they stand now are going in to the military, there I would like to go to sniper school and get the training needed for a sniper in the army. I’m not sure yet what branch but most likely the marines or navy. I have also thought of working on the planes on the aircraft carriers like my cousin does. Humanities will help me reach my goals by showing me different ideas and points of view that I have not seen before. This class will hopefully show me something that I will find interesting and will learn to like.
The reason I took humanities over any of the other english classes is because I knew we would be participating in plays and symphonies. I am a member of the band and want to continue in music through college. I would like to be a high school music director, and learning more about music productions in others ways than just band will help me. I am trying to go to BYU which is a hard school to get into academically then want to continue on into their school of music if I can get in, and am very excited for this year and have always wanted to see more plays and productions. So in this year of humanities I want to make the best of the activities we attend and really pay attention and be able to critique them for my own musical growth. So I can use professionals to see good things and bad things they do with their musical talents so i can use ideas from the things i like as well.
From the ages of 5-14 my grandma would take me to a different play, musical, symphony, ballet almost every month so I have seen a variety of theater acts. When I saw I had the chance to take humanities as a class I jumped on it. The only downside was I wanted to take college prep because i will be attending some type of four-year university next year. So I had the hard desicion of choosing which class to take. I realized that I will be participating in absolutely nothing relating to drama and theater in my future, so I might as well take in all i can get right now. I hope this class will help to broaden my interest in theater so when I am older I will want to attend much more theater.
Brian Penoyer period 2 September 7
I wanted to take Humanities so badly becauase I love watching plays and musicals. The first one I ever saw was "A Midsummer Night's Dream" when I was in the fifth grade and I've been hooked to this day. I'm part of the school's Drama department (doing backstage work) and I want to continue to work in the theater after high school at Western. If I'm going to make this into my career though it would be great to know about some of the classics in theater and music, so this class is perfect. Plus after looking at the list of shows we'll be seeing I'm really excited because I know a few of them already and I would love to not only see them again but also learn a little more about them (especially Midsummer which remains one of my favorite shows). Plus, my friends who have graduated have all told me this is a fun class to be in and that you learn alot, which is reason enough for me to take any class.
I'm taking humanities because it looks like the most interesting english class available to seniors. I didn't really want to spend another year analyzing novels, and I think watching the plays/operas/ballets we read in class be performed onstage will be a thousand times more fun than just sitting in class. Plus, I saw Romeo and Juliet with the humanities class last year and thought it was amazing. I've been in performing arts (band, and in the past dance) since 5th grade, and so usually I'm the one onstage, not the one in the audience, so im really excited to gain a new perspective. Next year I plan to be a a 4-year college, most likely Gonzaga. I want to work in counterterrorism someday, so I hope to get my degree in international relations.
I intended to take debate class for half the year, because I had sucessfully passed Creative writing junior year. Mr. Dilling of course changed all that, he felt it was his duty to help me realize that a year of humanities would look better on a high school transcript as opposed to a semester of debate/creative writing. But at the same time I became very interested in all the class field trips...i love plays/operas musicals i love theather...I think there's no better way to explore an Author's art than through book/stage comparison. I like that we get to see other people's interpertation of a book. I enjoy looking through both ends of the spectrum. On top of that Mr. Schindler is devilishly cute :) haha

With everyother English class you sit down and you read a book. But when I was told what humanities actually did I wanted to join because I have never been able to attend any type of performing arts and this seemed like an oppurtunity that would never really happen again. I thought it was amazing that I got to see these plays and operas as a class requirement. I joined because i really wanted to experience something in my life that was truly beautiful. Wow that sounded silly.

Humanities has never been a strong suit fot me. In taking this class I hope to understand more about theqatre as well as to enjoy it at the same time. In taking this class it will help me look at theatre in a completely different way than i do now. It will help me understand more of the plot line. Being a very mathmatical and science oriented guy. It will help me understand more english this year. I'm looking foward to taking this class, it should be very fun.
I don't actually know what i expect to learn from this class. I heard from many of my friends that this class was amazing and opened their eyes into the art world in a different way. My plans for next year is to travel to Spain for college and learn about their culture and language. Between humanities and AP art History i hope to learn more about the spanish culture and how Theatrical arts were born.
I am very excited to be taking Humanities this year. I chose humanities because I find art and theatre very interesting and haven't really gotten to experience much of it. I'm hoping to get a lot out of this class and be able to further understand the art behind all the plays, operas and ballets. I have heard many great things about this class and what an enjoyable experience it was. I haven't been to very many plays or operas so I am very excited to attend those. My plans for for the future include going to college and possibly taking more art and theatre classes. Art and theatre has always been something I've been interested in but haven't learned a whole about. I think this class will really help further my knowledge on theatre and art and help me to decide whether it is something I will pursue in my future.
the reason that i took humanities was because i really enjoy english and i enjoy going to plays. so taking humanities was a happy medium. i dont really like opera but i am open to new experiences and i think this class will open alot of new doors for me. i expect to learn about the theater and how to evaluate plays and operas, also i hope to not do as much writing in the class because i have already taken 3 years of english and learned all that already and this class looked like a different form of english so i was excited for that new type of learning. i am not really sure how humanities will help me reach my goals other than having it open more things up to me such as meeting different sorts of people and introducing me to the theater part of life. overall i think this class is going to be fun and i am super excited! -- Sam B.
I am taking humanities this year because I have always liked all forms of art, and I am not taking any art classes this year, so I decided to take humanities. It looks like its going to be a fun class, and it also doesn't look like its going to be terribly hard, which is also a good thing. The plays and operas and all of the other performances we are going to look like they will be fun, however I have never actually been to a stage performance so I don't really know what to expect. Everyone who Ive talked to who has gone to these performances before say you either like them or you don't, so I hope I do. All in all, I'm looking forward to a great year in this class overall.
I am taking Humanities this year to broaden my horizions. I have never been to an opera before, and I thought it would be interesting to study the performances before we actually saw them. Next year I am planning on going to a private college in North Carolina, studying Therapeutic Riding. Taking this class will hopefully give me good exposure to what is considered different. I have always enjoyed classical music and wanted to see other mediums of how classical music can be performed.
The reason i decided to take this year was because i wanted something different in an english class. I'm looking forward to learning about plays and operas and then actually attending them instead of just learning in the classroom. Also, i want to be able to understand theater better because i haven't gotten the chance to experience any plays or operas besides the Nutcracker. My plans for next year include going to college but i'm not sure what field i want to study in so this is a good opportunity to learn about something that i'm not as educated about. Another reason i chose this class is because i wasn't interested in the curriculum of College Prep and i wanted something more challenging than Creative Writing and Debate, so this was the perfect choice! All in all I think this class will be fun as well as challenging, and it will definitely help me decide whether or not studying the arts is something i will want to pursue once i graduate high school!
I decided to take humanities this year because I know that you need 4 years of English to get into any sort of 4-year college. After looking at all the other options for English this year I saw that humanities would be my best choice because I am not a creative writer and I don’t think I would take a debate class. Watching plays seems cool to me because I have not seen that many and it seems like a different sort of thing to do. Also the fact that we will be writing a college acceptance essay is a huge plus because I was worried about what mine would look like if I didn’t have that much help on it.
I decided to take humanities this year because i wanted something different. Something out of the ordinary. I have never been to the theater except going to a few orchestral performances. I am really excited to study the performances before we go and actually see them. I hope that through studying the performance before we see them i will understand the performance better. Taking Humanities this year will help me look and understand different aspects of life that i would normally overlook. Next year i am hoping to attend a private college in southern North Carolina. St. Andrews Presb. COllege in Laurinburg NC. Taking this course to broaden my horizons, will hopefully make me a "better person".

Personally, I chose to take Humanities because of the arts and entertainment aspect that is associated with this type of class. I do not have the privilege of going to as many performances as I would like. Also, I believed that if I took any other English class option I would be taking a class that was no different from the previous years, full of the typical book readings and tests that always followed them up. Signing up for Humanities was an easy decision to help prevent this and do something much more interesting for an entire school year. I plan on learning a lot from each reading, symphony, opera, play and ballet. Each sounds intriguing and will give a unique opportunity to learn a lot about something that I have little experience with. I expect to learn tips and techniques to become a stronger writer, which will assist in the college application essay writing process. This will improve my chances of accomplishing my goals after graduation. I plan to attend a school of the arts to become either a graphic designer or work in the field of computer animation. Humanities will help me reach my goals, because along with my graphic design and computer animation classes taken at Woodinville, this class will also be able to display my interest in the arts as a whole. I am already enjoying this class and look forward to what the future brings.
Humanites has always interested me and to be able to incorporate different types of theatre into an english class really made me want to take the course. I've never been to an opera or really big theatre performance so i found this was the perfect opportunity not only to go to many, but also study them. By taking humanities i am expecting to learn and understand the performances that we go to. I am not only excited to go to my first big symphony but to know about it. I look forward to experiencing the performances with a class, then being able to discuss and talk about it the next day. Next year i hope to go to Washington State University, however i am not sure what I want to study yet and I have never taken any kind of theatre or arts class. I think humanities will enhance my education and really make it diverse. It is different than the english i have taken in the past and that is important to me.
I chose to take humanities this year at woodinville high school because art and theater absolutly thrills me. I am very inspired by mr schilndlers enthusiasm in and out of the classroom. After highschool i plan to pursue my life goal in the art field specificly in modern dance. I havent experianced many plays or operas yet in my lifetime and i am really looking forward to the opertunity to explore the arts of ballet and opera. I believe that humanities will make me a more rounded person as well.
My decision was between Humanities and College Prep because Humanities seemed to be the better class for me. College Prep seems to be the ideal English class in preparation for college, but honestly I didn’t want to sit through another boring English class going through the same daily routine. Humanities is a great way to learn English, as it is fun with theater being the main subject. Through this class I expect to learn and write about theater arts, as well as to write a great college essay that will stand out. My plans for next year are definitely to attend a four year university, from where I can also receive my masters in business. I hope that with humanities, I will learn how to write an amazing essay which will help me get accepted into a university. I believe even though business is greatly associated with math and finance, the ability to write is also an important skill and could help me to be successful in the business world.

I'm taking Humanities because I'm very active and involved in performing arts. This class is great for me because it allows me to work from my strength as well as learn more about it. This year in Humanities I hope to learn more about Operas because I know little about them and they've always caught my interest. Also I'm very excited to be going to ballets because I thoroughly enjoy watching dance. Last year I saw "Romeo and Juliet" with my Mom and we both loved it! Next year I'm hoping to attend school for Musical Theatre. My top choices right now are Boston Conservatory, Julliard (for straight Theatre) and Illnois Wesleyan. I hope Humanities will increase my knowlege of the the performing arts so I can go into school next year open minded about other forms of performing arts and self expression.

English class makes me nervous. In past years, every day I dreaded walking into the classroom because it's not my strongest subject. Whether or not that is because all my English classes were boring, or because I have no confidence in my writing, I don't know. (It's probably a bit of both.) Taking humanities in place of the other English options is a way for me to avoid the parts of English that I dislike, while still getting out of it everything I need. Plus my sister took it last year and said she enjoyed it. I expect to learn how to look into the artistic elements in operas and ballets and in return, understand what they mean in a literal sense. Also, after reading the course description I expect to study and learn the different ideas from several different historical eras.
Next year I intend on enrolling in a nearby community college and then continuing my studies into the medical field, so Humanities probably isn't going to help me much in reaching my goals there. What it could potentially help me with is gaining the experience and knowledge I need to use in my college applications.
Humanities has always been an interesting subject to me as an alternative to a standard english class, because my favorite subject in school is history, and world history. I feel like because of my interest in history and different cultures that i will find this course very appealing. also i have look at attending a college in switzerland or another part of Europe and looking at the course descriptions there are many classes offered and specialized in Humanities over there, also I heard you are a very fun and energetic teacher which i will enjoy being in your class.
One of the reasons i took humanities was because of my older sister Jennifer. She said she had taken the class when she attended woodinville high school and really enjoyed it. All the other english classes didnt really interest me and i thought it would be very interesting to be able to go to a majority of different plays and operas. Overall i think this is going to be a really fun class to have during my last year at woodinville high school.
I wanted to take Humanities because I love everything about plays. My brother did Drama and I loved it. The way theatre works fasinates me. People think movie actors are talented, thats nothing compared to theatre.
When I was younger I was obsessed with the play, "Romeo and Juliet" like most little girls. I bought the script and practically know it by heart now. I'd like to learn how to understand some of the use of language in plays such as Shakespeare. So this year I'd like to go over a way to do so.
Next year, I already know I'm going to Seattle University because I commited last year for a soccer scholorship. I've always wanted to be a second grade teacher so as of now that's what I plan to study. Although who knows what i'll want after learning about different careers and options in college. As of now, I'm just opening my horizon to things I wouldn't normally choose, like humanities!
I chose to take humanities because it sounded like a much more exciting english class with so many opportunities. I love going to see different performances so it is very appealing to me. I have gone to see shows such as the Phantom of the Opera and the King and I, both at the fifth avenue. It is a great way to become more cultured and I hope to increase this even more by taking this class. I expect to learn more about the eras and the culture of them because that is something i'm not very familiar with. I'm not quite sure of my plans for next year. I might take some time off to travel and do some missionary work with my church. After that I would hopefully like to go to a school for fashion design. Since any career I will have will be focused around creativity being in a cultural class focusing on the arts will help me succeed in my goals. It will also be so exciting and inspirational to see the costumes since that pertains to my interests.

I am taking Humanities because I love the arts and have always enjoyed reading plays and dramas for English class, so why not take a class devoted to arts and theatre for English. I also enjoy participating in our high school's drama club and its shows, and this is just another way for me to enjoy performing arts and expand my horizons. I expect to learn more about opera and ballet, I already enjoy musicals and plays but have not had the opportunity to study and watch operas and ballets. My plans for next year are to go to college, and although I don't plan on studying the arts, I feel that Humanities will overall improve my education and make me a more informed and well rounded member of society who has learned to enjoy the finer things in life.
I’m taking Humanities this year because I wanted an English class that wasn’t as challenging as Pre-AP with Ms. Hockley last year. College Prep was a good option but I decided that I would enjoy writing and examining operas and ballets more than the literature offered in the other courses. I am really excited to develop my skills as a writer by learning and dissecting all of the curriculum that you have planned for us this year. As far as my plans for next year, I am looking forward to going to a 4 year college somewhere on the west coast. My top choices are some small private colleges in Oregon, but I have also been thinking a lot about the University of Washington. I took a summer course there over the summer and I grew to love the campus and the school itself, but I am concerned about the location and the difficulty of the application process. I hope to attend a school that will allow me to realize what I want to pursue as a career later in life, because as of now, I am still unsure. I understand that the college essay is a very important part of the application, so I am looking forward to finishing an essay that I can confidently turn in, and I hear that you are the guy to go to if I need help or have questions about that. This year will be interesting, but I cant wait to get the ball rolling.

Im taking Humanities this year as what sounded like a great alternative to the boring rountine of a normal english class. My goal in taking Humanities was to take a class that seemed engaging. In my past years of english class, my typical experience was to read a section of a book at home, and the next day, to engage in a "class" discussion where 3 kids volunteered their thoughts and the rest slept. Personally, i was the one who slept. It is not at all that the book was uninspiring by any means. It was the way the class was taught. I have been told that Humanities really is different from individuals who took it in years past. In the way that this class switches subjects often, and goes to physically see literature and art I am predicting that I will have a great time taking this course. I am unsure of my path in the future but I believe that humanities will show me new experiences, if not help me choose a major for college. I also hope to learn how to interpret these plays in the visual form.

I am taking humanities mainly because I went to a few of the humanities performances last year, and was blown away. To be able to get into such quality ballets and operas for so little is such a great opportunity, I would be an idiot to pass it up. I am also taking humanities to expand my knowledge of theater, so when any of my friends bring up theater I won't look like an idiot. I also hope that humanities will give me a taste of good theater, and give me insight enough to be able to pick out good plays and operas to see in the future.
I am taking humanities because last year i went to almost half of the performances and they really were great. Sure, i didnt like them ALL but they were good and something i have never experienced before. I am always looking for new ways to broaden my knowledge and humanities seems like a good way to accomplish that. This class is completely different then the normal english classes, where you read a book, write about it, then move on. This class will teach about things i have never even heard about. I expect to learn more about different famous composers, and how operas mainly work. Also we will probably learn more about art and the culture where opera origionally came from. In the future im not quite sure that opera will be for me in schooling, but being in this class will still broaden my mind and maybe take me in a completely new direction. I am deffinately looking forward for this year.
I took Humanities to for one earn my final English credit and for two I would like to experience what its like to go to a play or opera. I would like to read the books, study them and learn about the authors. I hope to go more in depth with my reading experiences. I hope to learn a little bit more about acting for my ballroom dancing career. This will help me when I am performing. Next year I wish to go to college taking coursed like humanities and learning the art of ballroom dancing. If I don't end up following a career in ballroom dancing, I'm going to be pursing a career in acting. This class will aid me in knowing how behind the set works.
Humanities seemed like a fun way to stll get my English credit. Also, I had Hockley last year for English 11 and she told us about what your class did; it seemed very interesting to me. She told us about the performances your class attends, and I absolutely love opera and ballet; so I thought that would be exciting to experience. When you came to visit Hockley during our class period, or before it during options, your attitude always seemed so fun, and I thought that would make class a lot of fun as well
I'm taking humanities because every year i go to some sort of play with my grandma. It's always been an interest of mine, so when i heard about this class i knew i wanted to take it. I expect to learn more about the plays, operas, and ballets. Rather than just seeing them and not knowing anything about them. My plans for next year are to attend a 4 year college. I'm not sure how humanities will help me reach my goals, because I'm not sure what i want to do in my future. Since plays have always interested me maybe taking this class will help me decide what i want to do in college.
I'm taking humanities because I am extremely interested in all kinds of theater. I've been going to The Nutcracker for Christmas every year since I was two. Every year it seems like I'm seeing a new production, as as I've gotten older I've been able to appreciate it more. I've been going to the full Humanities Program since I was a sophomore, and I hope taking this class will allow me to further appreciate what I'm seeing. Next year I hope to go to Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR and study... something. I'm thinking about Marketing, Journalism, Architecture, and Fashion Merchandising as potential majors, and am definitely going to minor in either History or Philosophy. If I don't get into Pacific I may be going to OSU, U of Delaware, or York College of Pennsylvania. I believe Humanities will help me reach my goals by showing me the world in a whole new light and allowing me to appreciate art on another level, which applies to any one of my potential majors.
Origionally, i was not supposed to be taking humanities, but due to a schedule change, i ended up in this class. My counsiler gave me a choice to stick with this class or to drop out. So i decided to give it a chance and see what its all about. So far i really like this class. It is very interesting and i like how the topics arnt "normal" english topics.
I expect to learn more about art, culture, and some poetry or music possibly. I am already a dancer, and i take ballet every week and have seen many ballets, it would still be awesome to learn more about the background.
I do not plan to go to college next year, college isnt ment for everyone and i believe that if i set my mind to it, i can achieve whatever i want without a college education.
I believe this class will help me get a better understanding of the arts and its culture. Being a dancer, art plays a big part in our lives. So knowing more about the history will help me understand where dance came from.

This year I am taking Humanities because it was recommended to me by two previous Woodinville high seniors, Daniel Clark, and Corey Stoll. When these two young gentlemen mentioned humanities I was very interested, I thought to myself why not make senior year a blast with an awesome teacher and a hand full of field trips to go on. This year, I expect to learn about the art of previous time theatre, which includes ballets, operas, plays, and symphonies. Also I expect to learn interesting details about the play writers, and musical composers. Next year I plan to play baseball at a university somewhere along the west coast. Humanities will defiantly help me reach my goals because I will be educated to a deeper meaning of writing, compared to someone who only takes four years of basic English.
Near the beginning of last year I only thought about one english class to take, and that was creative writing and debate. About half way through the year I started hanging out with a lot of seniors who were in your class. They all talked about how much they loved it. They all said that the trips down to Seattle with everyone were some of the best times they had. Two seniors who talked about it the most was cory stoll and danny clark. Everytime i was with them they had something good to say about the class. So I decided to sign up for both English classes. I got both of them. In humanities this year I want to learn to appreciate something I have no experience with. I believe this class will help me look at things differently at first look. When I was younger I thought that I would never like an opera. But in the first few days of school listening to how much you enjoy theater made me think about it more and it got me excited for this year. I believe this class will help me see everything in a different light so I don't judge it right away.

I think Humanities was a good choice of english class to take. I am definately looking forward to going to some of the operas ive been hearing about and Im ready to write my college application essay right now pretty much. Im sure I will learn alot this year in Huanities and it will completely prepare me for any obstacles in my way of leaving for college.
