I chose a piece that is a statues of a Head of a Roman seen here http://employees.oneonta.edu/farberas/arth/Images/109images/Roman/republican/head.jpg for the Roman period of art. I this piece because it is so real and so detailed which is one of the characteristics for this time. The wrinkles show all that this man has been through and all the desperation that this man has been through while living in this time period. While before the man was seen as a beautiful creature, this man is seen as a true individual who is special in his own way.

I chose Deposition from the Cross by Jacopo Pontormo, seen here: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9a/Jacopo_Pontormo_004.jpg
It is an example of a Mannerist painting. I like this painting because each person is moving, or acting in a different way, and yet all of their expressions suggest the same emotions. The colors all flow together and it just seems interesting because there is so much going on, such as the man with the only dark colors being held up and the woman reaching for the man as if in vain.

I am doing the Roman Period and the Maison Carree, Nimes. which can be seen at this website. http://www.scholarsresource.com/browse/work/2144600726
This Maison shows how well, geometrically, it is put together. Through the Maison, the columns are of the Ionic build (meaning its tall and lean with a base and top) You can tell that the Romans based their work off the Greeks Parthenon because of the Ionic columns and the 'Golden Section' theory used to geometrically build it. Not only does this show how much the Greeks influenced the Romans but it also shows how the Romans put their own perspective on it with the different design of the base and top!

The building that i chose is Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York. I choose it as a representation of architecture from the Gothic period.
I like this picture because the Gothic period had a lot of tall buildings and was characterized by pointed arches, and the exterior wall buttresses. And this building has some designs built into the outer walls of the building that I think are pretty amazing. And it has some of the vaulted points that Gothic architecture had.

I really like Rembrandt's paints. One of my favorite paint is The rape of Europa. Rembrandt is from period of Baroque and I like how he put emotion and feelings in his painting. I also like color tones of his paints. He used a lot of strong colors and opposite colors. He painted smooth and emotionally. Rembrandt's painting looks like imagination with nature. I really like that.
This is the website that my favorite painting.

rechtheion_hi.jpg
I like the Porch of the Maidens, the back porch on the Erechtheion, a Greek building. The porch has six females, or caryatids, holding up the roof, as opposed to the ionic columns on the front of the building. The maidens are types rather than actual individuals, which I find interesting considering it is a temple. The building is from the Classical period and can be considered a sister building to the Parthenon. I like this work because the idea of women holding up the temple instead of the classic boring column. Also women are a good change from the classic man supporting buildings, as they did beforehand in Greece, and almost always in nearby Egypt at the time. Also, symbolically I like the idea of females supporting the building, putting them in a place of importance often reserved for men.

The piece of art that I like the most is Death of Hyacinth by Jean Broc:
http://sunsite.icm.edu.pl/cjackson/b/broc1.jpg
I like this painting because I think the use of color and the detail on the faces of the people in it. All the colors are smooth, light and soft and they all go very well together. The background is beautiful but it pushes the people forward to get you to notice them. Also the people’s faces in this painting are so full of emotion.
Mackenzie Engel Period 6
The statue i chose is the Head of the Roman patrician, from the Roman Republic period of art. This piece is an example of republican verism, in which the artists portrayed their powerful subjects in a super-realistic manner. I love anything in sculpture that gives the subject more character, so i was immediately drawn to this piece due to the excess of wrinkles and folds in the old mans face. I also found the blank stone eyes haunting and suggestive of emotion.
My statue can be found here- http://www.lanecc.edu/artad/ArtHistoryProgram/10-6.htm

http://media.photobucket.com/image/notre%20dame/christiansen_a/Paris/DSCN2096.jpg
The Cathedral of Notre Dame built during the Gothic period is one of my all time favorite architectural creations. The stone front of the building is so foreboding and sinister it has a creepy sort of ancient feeling. Also the stained glass inside the church is extremely beautiful. The best part of this great achievement is the exquisite detail that adorns both the outside and inside of the building. The human figures that line the outside of the building are plentiful and unique. The pointed arches are also inlaid with various religiously important figures. The overall feel is grand, but not over done. It combines so much detail and history together that it is diffidently my favorite building.
andrew song period 6
The piece i have chosen which can be seen here, http://employees.oneonta.edu/farberas/arth/Images/109images/Roman/republican/head.jpg, is called Head of a Roman. I chose this piece in the Roman period of art, because it is so real and detailed, like most roman art of its time. The detailed facial features like his wrinkles show how his life is rough, but at the same time it shows his true individualism.
Helen Wiltsey Period 4
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Botticelli_Venus.jpg
The painting I choose was The Birth of Venus by Botticelli. With the intricate leaf work, as well as the muted colors, the work as a whole has a aesthetically pleasing composition. It makes use of the triangle method, with using Horae with the cape, about to clothe Venus, and the god of wind Zephyrus blowing her towards the shore to frame Venus in the tallest point of the triangle. Mostly I like this painting for the colors and the pretty style of the people.

I chose The Last Judgment
(Michelangelo). The reason i chose this painting is because it shows Michelangelo at his prime, every piece of work that he illustrated/orchestrated was masterful, in my opinion his art was greater than that of the late Da Vinci.
"The Last Judgment is a depiction of the second coming of Christ and the apocalypse. The souls of humans rise and descend to their fates, as judged by Christ surrounded by his saints...In the painting, Michelangelo does a self portrait depicting himself as St. Bartholomew after he had been flayed (skinned alive)(Wikipedia) ."
I love this picture because Michelangelo not only painted himself in the picture but he also used the faces of other saints and priests in the church, this picture really illustrates the personal struggles Michelangelo is going through in his life during this period.
This picture is a great example of the Renaissance because it shows the emphasis on detail, and perception, (i.e. the realistic(ness) of the muscles on the bodies and angels, in this picture, the clouds are painted with volume, and appear to be "fluffy" like etc.) The color in this picture also speaks loudly, Michelangelo painted with lighter, softer colors, in comparison to the more "standard" darker richer colors. Another amazing aspect to the picture is the scenery, which artist in the past had struggled with. Michelangelo seemed to make the hills and the waters, and cloud, and other elements of nature "pop" out, they have a realness to them.

I chose the Diskobolos, created in the classical period, because it seemed to be a perfect example of artwork from this era. It helps to show how far we have come when compared to modern art. This discus thrower statue shows very little emotion and an early stage of human form and observation.

/introtogreece/cc301/Discobolos.jpg
I was particularly struck by the intricacy and detail in this particular Classical Greek statue. The way that the depicted discus thrower’s every muscle is visible and realistic is incredible. Slight bulges in his thighs perfectly match how a real thigh would look, with stunning accuracy. On the inside of his right arm and back of his hand you can even see his veins for pete’s sake. Every single aspect of the body’s internal workings is implied incredibly realistically, bone, muscle, and circulatory system alike. That this was made out a block of marble with hammer and chisel simply blows my mind.

I haven't exactly go to the point where I found any specific pictures for any period yet. Missed a few days this week. But from what I have seen from other people's work and the little research I have done, I really like the art from the Medival Period. So I would think that my favorite art piece would come from that period.
Rebecca Taicz. Period 6
I chose the painting NIghtmare by Henry Fuseli from the Romantic period. I like this piece because it is such an interesting mix between the realistic and romanitic ideals of the time period. The contrast between the girl and the demons, the light and dark, is perfectly captured, and the theme of the piece, that there are demons in our sleep that give us nightmares, is also particularly interesting to me.

I really love Donatello's David. Comparing that to Michelangelo's David it is really kinda funny but also intriguing. Donatello's sculpture looks kind of like a nymph or a small child. Where as most creations seem to be pensive, this David seems laid back and pleased. It's cool to have something that is similar but different at the same time.
Michelle Le, period 2
My favorite work of art is probably The Slave Ship, by Joseph Mallord William Turner, which is from the Romantic period. I like this one best because I think its the most exciting out of all of them. Its not so realistic like a lot of the art from the other periods tend to be. The strokes Turner used for his painting is more abstract, rather than controlled and restrained. I also like the bright colors and how imaginative and dramatic it is.

the art peice that i chose to write about was the Farnese ceiling in the Fresco gallery. i chose this because i think its insance how someone could paint a ceiling first off, and then put so much time and detail into something like this and make it turn out the way it did. i think that this is an incredible talent and i wish i could see this ceiling in person so i could appreciate it more. it seems like it took years and years to make just from all of the little things and details that are in it that you cant really notice until you look really closely. this ceiling in an amazing peice of art and its absolutly incredible.

The piece I chose as my favorite is 'Wanderer above the Sea of Fog' by: Caspar David Friedrich. (http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z203/Huxleybard/471px-Caspar_David_Friedrich_032.jpg) This is from the Romanistic period. The thing i loke most about it is how majestic it looks. It's a picture of a guy standing on top of a huge rock peak and he can see a great distance, but pretty much nothing more than fog since he's above the clouds. I like the point of view percieved by this painting because you can see what the 'wanderer' can see, sort of his point of view. I also like the colors used in this painting, it seems that the further off you get in the sea of fog, the lighter the colors get.

Cloister of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is one of my favorite pieces that I found. Throughout all the art I enjoyed the architecture the best and my favorite style was Romanesque. The columns that lead up to detailed fragments and cloisters are beautiful. The round arches and symmetrical styles make every building seem like it has a history more intriguing than you'll every truly know. I myself am interested in the Roman Art style more than the other styles we have looked at this week. I think I like Roman are more is because it makes me think how in the world did they do that? Some of the sculptures that I have seen are done so well they look as if they could come alive. But it’s not just the sculptures that I’m impressed with it’s also the architecture I enjoy as well. Also one of my favorite peaces of Roman art that is a work of art on a grand scale is the Colosseum. It too has a presence that stated and still does state the glory of Roman Art and power.

I chose a piece from Romanticism. It is called Watson and the shark by John Singleton.
http://www.jim3dlong.com/1778_John_Singleton_Copley_Brook_Watson_and_the_Shark-wR400.jpg
This specific painting shows a man battling the beast which puts it in Romanticism. I love the way the painting shows such emotion from each person in the picture. The man in the water losing hope from his face as the shark attacks. And the people in the boat with such determination to get him out of the water in time. What I do find strange about the picture is there are several boats (ships) in the background and it makes you think maybe their near dock but I wonder why would a shark attack so close to shore??? The artist I believe may of not thought that through. Overall the picture catchs my attention over alot of other pictures!

The piece I chose is called Lady Liberty Leading the People, by Eugene Delacroix. You can find it as this web adress:
http://vivian-folkenflik.org/VRF%20Sources/Delacroix%20Liberty%20Web%20Gallery%20Art%20wga%20800.jpg. I like this piece because of the symbolism it uses. Lady Liberty is, of course, not an actual historical figure but more represents the spirit of liberty found in the French Revolution. I also like this piece because of its complexity. The central figure is Lady Liberty, but around her there is so much more going on. There are poeple dying, people running away, and they all have different facial expressions and come from different backgrounds. You see the working class, the soldiers, the merchants, and in the background is a french city. The general theme of the triumph of ideals over everything else is something I find very interesting

The western facade of Reims Cathedral, France.
This is an amazing structure that I wish was my house! It might be cold during the winter becasue of the complete stone encompassing exterior walls. Arches peak in many places over the structure and its beautiful the amount of detail that is present. Over the door, there are circles that undoubtibly contain stained glass. Difficulty of building arches was a great enough task let alone creating circles that are responsible for holding a portion of the weight atop the windows. The tall tower is probably 10 stories that is one unit at the bottom and splits into two seperate towers towards the top. Wish I could see it in person! I'm thinking a road trip for the humanitites classes!

i chose a piece called Hercules from the Roman period. This was a sculpture of a warrior and his muscles and his expressions are done so well. He is posing to stab someone in front of him and it seems like it could actually be a war scene. I like to think about the people who make these statues because of how much precision and delicacy that they would have to use to create these statues.

The painting that I found to be one of the most interesting is by William Turner in the Romanticism Period. The painting is called "Rain, Steam and Speed" and it is a fairly un-conventional image of the front of a train coming towards the viewer. I believe that this painting represents the Romanticism period because it shows the shift from painting the visual world as it is seen in the Neoclassical period to the emotions, of imagination, sincerity and individuality that the Romanticism period is known for. Im so glad I was able to be exposed to such an impressive piece of art.

the piece of art that i enjoyed the most was Knight, Death and Devil that came out of the Northern Renissance period. you could really feel the pain of this artist through his art and you knew that he had something great on his mind that he lost alot of sleep over. it was just such a dark painting and carried suck a powerful message.

Ulm-Muenster-SchmerzensMann by Joachim Köhler was the statue that I chose. This piece of art is from the Gothic period in about the 1400's. This is my favorite piece of art because I like the statues more than the paintings. In my opinion it takes more skill to do a statue rather than a painting. This sculpture stood out to me in particular because it is extremely life like. These people look like they could just walk away. Also I really like the way that they are positioned around the columns and really stand out because they are made from a different stone.

The piece i like the most is the painting "Lion attacking a horse". This is a piece from the romanticism period and it fits it very well. The idea came from the artists dreams and imagination and the picture almost comes to life when you look at it. It is very powerful and you can get the dark feeling when you look at it. There is also alot of emotion in the picture which also is another reason i like it because i almost want to create a story in myhead of whats happening. It makes me think and imaginate what is going on. It deffinetley caught my attention the most.

I really like this one because it's so much different then what things look like now. I like how there's so many arches and what's it's made of. Also it's not all inside and the shape of it is so different. The way it's build makes it look like it's been threw a lot which makes it more special and unique. It also combined a lot of different orders and it was made so long ago it's such a different cite.

After researching all of the art periods, I found my favorite to be the Rococo period. I love the french, ornate style with pastel colors. So the painting I chose was from the 1700's Rococo art period. It is called The Swing by Jean Homore Frangonard. It is a lighthearted piece with lovely colors and light and it really displays art from that time period well.

I chose a painting from Italian Renaissance, Renoir because there is so much detail in the painting. When I first looked at the painting i looked at the people that the artist clearly wanted you to focus on first in front, then worked my way to the back. It is almost like an illusion how artists can understand the eye and how people look at a picture. I also love the textures of this painting and the way he used the colors, it is very appealing. Immediately seeing this painting you can categorize it as Italian Renaissance.

The painting I chose is Maas at Dordrecht by Aelbert Cuyp, a work from the Baroque period. I like this piece because it depicts the sky, water and ships so realistically, and also has a very calm, relaxed tone. This painting features a very well constructed look at the natural world, which was typical of the period. Though Baroque art is characterized for its high drama, there were also works such as this that showed stillness and restraint.

The Piece that I think is my favorite from any period would have to be The Parthenon from the High Classical age. This piece intrigues me the most because I have always found movies about Greek and Greek mythology to be very interesting, and i think that the Parthenon is a perfect example of the Greek culture at its prime, and how it still stands today in Greece as an icon of their culture. The Parthenon is such a neat and beautifully designed building that shows the genius of the Greek culture at the time.

The piece of art that really caught my attention is a painting called the Fountain by Hubert Robert which was from the Rococo period. I really like this painting because of the colors in it contrast really and certain things really caught my attention. Gold embellishment was popular in this period and it is definitely portrayed in this painting as well as many other characteristics of the Rococo period. Overall I think it's a great demonstration of what art was like during that time.

This is an excellent example of Gothic architecture. I really like this style of building because it is so interesting to look at. The sides of the buildings are so ornately detailed that it seems almost impossible to do, and the steeple on the top of the building is an amazing work of art in itself. It must have taken all of the artists of this period forever to complete these buildings with all of the effort they put into them, but the end result is a phenomenal piece of architecture that will live on long after the artist.

I chose St. Anthony Tormented by Demons. http://www.usc.edu/programs/cst/deadfiles/lacasis/ansc100/library/images/006.jpg if you want to see it. Even though it seems to be a rough sketch, being only black and white and not having everything defined, there is a lot going on in the picture. Anthony seems to be at a perfect state of acceptance in it and i find this calmness fascinating. The demons tear him apart and he doesn't fight it at all. The fact that this picture is so simplistic in the medium and materials used makes it that much more impressive that he gains so much perspective and is able to have so much going on in the picture. St. Anthony's tormentors may tear him apart but he will not give them the satisfaction of acknowledging them. I really admire this piece.

I chose Roman Art for sure because the Romans seem so elegant and at the same time threatoning. The art they created was amazing such as the statues of people in poses and even the erchitecture such as the grand colosseum. The Romans knew how to put feeling and texture into their art and that is an amazing asset for an artist to be equiped with. I found a picture of the Colosseum:
http://www.instatravel.org/images/the-roman-colosseum_2263.jpg
Its really hard to believe that just humans could accomplish something so amazing. The romans interest me in their forms of art and even some of their thoughts on champion bloodlines and the limit of the gladiators bloodline. Its really interesting reading about how they lived.

I chose a piece from the Classical Greek Period. The piece is called The Winged Victory of Samothrace or Nike of Samothrace. The Winged
Victory of Samothrace is a third century B.C. marble sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike. I like this sculpture because its stance/ form. The sculpture is eleven feet tall and it takes a stance that appears kind of like wild triumph or confidence and free like and weightless. Also, I like how realistic the sculpture appears: you can see the ruffling of the wings and her dress as if the sculpture of Nike is about to take flight. This sculpture of Nike is meant to portray the thrill of victory, along with this one can enjoy the beauty that accompanies this thrill.

My picture
That is my absolute favorite painting from any of the art periods. It is romanticism, and it for some reason intrigues me. I think it is because you can't see the man's face. That would make such a difference if you could. it really makes the person looking at the picture wonder and use teir own imagination. Is the man going to jump into the ocean? Or is he scared? It's just a sort of haunting painting, and that makes me curious.

The piece of art I have chosen to write about is called “Head of a Roman.” The picture can be viewed at http://employees.oneonta.edu/farberas/arth/Images/109images/Roman/republican/head.jpg.
I chose this piece of Roman art because is it very real looking with small distinct details. Such as most roman arts of the time, many of the paintings very very detailed with a lot of time and effort. By viewing the face you can actually tell how closely done the project is. The rough wrinkles resemble the hardships he has had throughout his life.
I have not been able to put a finger on my exact favorite piece of artwork but my favorite piece would probably come from the Rococo art period. This is because all of the painstaking work they put into it makes it so realistic and since it seems to be lit up by light in the picture makes it that much more amazing.

The piece of art that I chose was the Ara Pacis Augustae "Altar of Augustan Peace". I thought this artwork was intresting because it was a memorial about the Emperor Augustus. The altar is created all in white marble. There are also pictures of the Emperor and his family offering sacrifices to the gods. This picture is beautiful. It pulls you into the mood of the painting. The colors bring attention to the moon which is yellow with the purple around it. In the shadows of a tree are two people. I sort of wish i could experience a view that they do in the picture. This picture is one of many romantic period pictures I enjoy.

I chose a piece by Donatello, it is a sculpture of Mary Magdalene. It is very realistic and depicts the pain and torment on her face, and the poverty and lowliness of her circumstances by the rags she is wearing. You can get a good look at the sculpture which now resides in a museum in Florence Italy. This sculpture is a great example of the Renaissance realism and rebirth of Greek sculpture, but also has religious connections. Donatello depicts her in the act of praying but also shows the pain and suffering on her face, it is both ugly and beautiful at the same time.

For my piece I chose the statue of Constantine the Great. This piece is from the Roman period of art. I really like this statue because of his eyes. His eyes are huge and look (if they were in color) blue and beautiful. We have studied that in Roman art statues and portraits are on the verge of showing emotion, which this statue represents perfectly. It looks at though the person is about to cry, or sulk. I really enjoy this piece, I find it beautiful and sentimental in a way.

I picked the Notre Dame Cathedral due to the fact that I remember it from a disney movie and I have always loved the way it looked. The cathedral would be classified as Gothic. My favorite part of the cathedral are the 2 large pillars that seem to pierce the sky. The gorgeous stained glass is simply amazing and has always caught my eye. I thought I would pick something from the gothis period just to show that if you call someone a goth that you are calling someone a beautifully crafted building so maybe its a compliment.

This is the fastest way to get to David's Oath of the Horatii. My main reason for loving this piece is the extreme detail that goes into every aspect of the painting. Every stroke or line looks like it was meant to be there. The use of shadows is particularly interesting, as every part of the painting looks shaded.

I chose a sculpture from the East Pediment of the Parthenon called Three Goddesses found here http://www.brynmawr.edu/Acads/Cities/wld/00270/00270h.jpg from the High Classical period. I really like this statue because it’s so lifelike. Even without the heads or arms the three women in the sculpture look real, the waves and ripples in their draped clothes and the way they are crouching and laying is so life like. The most incredible part is that it was done exclusively and painstakingly by hand to perfection. I mean today it would be easy to do a sculpture like that with a machine and modern tools but they did it carefully with just some primitive tools and their hands. It’s truly amazing.

The Koln Cathedral, also known as the Kolner Dom and the Cologne Cathedral (the official name being: Hohe Domkirche St. Peter und Maria) in Germany which was built during the Gothic period is one of the most beautiful buildings ever created. I love the way it seems to just reach for the sky as if to touch heaven. The building has beautiful stained glass windows, looks very sharp and pointy from the outside and from the inside the ceiling is tall and full of arches. The Koln Cathedral is the largest church facade in the world. The work began around 1248, continued until 1548, halted in 1842, and finally was completed in 1880. This cathedral is one of the most stunning and breathtaking buildings ever built.

One of my favourite paintings is Domenico Ghirlandio's 'An Old Man and his Grandson', from the Italian Renaissance era.

I really like it because of the detail it shows, and the simple subject matter. It depicts two regular, average people in an very day moment, rather than being one of the many portraits of the rich and influential, or one of the many created for the Church and based solely around the spiritual imagery of the church.
I like the idea of showing just an everyday moment in the life of two people, and I think the artist painted it very honestly. The people look real, not glossed over in any way, and the details in the background create a three-dimensional depth to the image.

I Really like this piece of Archetechture because it is so elaborate. It is amazing to imagine how much work it took to build such an amazing structure back before machenary. My favorite part about this structure is that the detail. It looks as if someone built it and then sculpted the points and details of the structure. The beautiful power that this structure has within seems to call out and bring people to its front doors. Its amazing to think how much work people did before machinery.

One of my favorite paintings is called "The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci during the Italian Renaissance period. I like how there is a lot of theories behind it and as well as a story. Its not just a painting of something random. Its a painting on the final days of jesus.

The piece I chose was the last judgment that is in the Duomo in Florence. The painting tells a biblical story and is extremely detailed. It is crazy that someone could paint this on to a roof in a building.

My favorite work of art tha I have looked at so far is he west facade of the Reims cathedral. It represents the gothic period very well. The stained glass looks unbelievable. Also the massive detail that went into making the outside of it is ridiculous. I can't believe someone could accomplish something of that magnitude that long ago.

I choose "The Last Judgement" from the Italian Renaissance. I picked this piece because of all the detail, and everything that's going on. It keeps me interested, and with everything going on it's fun to look at. The combination of the colors, the people, and the action i keep finding new things when i look at it.

Notre Dame Cathedral interior
architect Victor Bourgeau
First off, what is not to like about this gothic structure. After looking at various views of the interior, I couldn't get past how magical the hues of blue, green, red and gold made it look. Stained glass covers the arches surrounding the giant alter, making it stand out even more. The light from the glass shining down on Jesus and other biblical figures is very representative of the gothic period. Everything about the interior is so elaborate, with the high arches and hand carved detailing in the wood columns, that it would be impossible to take in all at once.

My favorite piece of art is the Notre Dame in Paris. This building falls in the Gothic art style. All of the intricate designs on the structure really make it come to life. When I look at the building I am in awe because I think of all of the hard work that went into creating such a masterpiece. This is what beautiful is to me.

I chose the Colosseum, in Italy. This is a good example of Roman art because it shows how in their architecture they used the developing of concrete structures unlike all the previous art eras.
I like it because it's a beautiful building, and I also like the history that it has.

One thing that I have found I liked was the Piazza della Signoria in Florence. An image is shown at http://www.florenceguides.com/studiolo1.jpg. Im not sure why I found this building so intriging. I think its because there are so many different pictures all in one place. I love how each image has nothing to do with each other but they all are related. Also the architecture of the bulding its self is quite amazing.

The piece of art that catches my eye the most is the notredame cathedral. This church is a work of art from the Gothic period of art history. I really like the pointy roof tops and the arches that accent the sides of this ,magnificent work of art. One thing that shocked me the most about this buildings is its colors. Nope the colors in the Gothic period to me are darker tones of brown and black and dark reds, but this building is a tanish color.
