1. Why is Orientalism used in writing Operas and other works?

By changing the story and location, or even just the location, of an Opera, it becomes potentially less offensive to the audience. If a writer were to set an overly sensual piece, or a piece with any other offensive material, in their homeland, where the audience is from, it could be distasteful to those watching.

2. Who wrote the Pearl Fishers, when, and where did he set it?

Georges Bizet wrote the Pearl Fishers in 1863, and set it in Sri Lanka.

I enjoyed the play very much. I really did not expect it to be that good, and when the actors started out by mingling with the audience it honestly did not seem to defy my expectations. However, it turned out to be a really enjoyable play. I particularly liked the Pantalone actor, and the eccentric Silvio. It was amusing how all the characters seemed to have vastly different outfits, ones that didn't fit in at all and yet seemed to make sense in an obscure way. The only complaint I would have is that in trying to make it enjoyable, I think the Seattle Shakespeare Company went a little over the top. There were moments when some of the things they did were simply too obviously intentional that they ceased to be humerous. Particularly I noticed Truffildino doing this, but that could be largely because he is the main character and shows up the most. Clarice however, kinda pushed it as well. Over all though, it was a very good production.

The way that the play started was a refreshing change for me. When I was first starting to enter the Seattle Center theater, I was confused. The characters where out mingling with the entering audience, saying the play was called "Merchant of Venice." I even asked my mom if we were at the right place. Then I saw Mr. Schindler and Mr. Green inside and realized we were. I liked the intimate feeling that the theater gave off, and I thought it worked well with how the characters interacted with the audience. My favorite part about the stage was the opening windows on each side. I liked how the characters could use them to pop out randomly and make a remark about something. I wasn't a huge fan of the costumes, although I do believe they added a great amount to the humor. The way they had it set up with the on-stage director, I was expecting all of the characters to come running out in their ridiculous costumes, then be sent away by the "director," saying something like "No, no, no! This is all wrong!" where they would then go back and fix them up and make the costumes more believable. On the other hand, I'm glad they didn't change again because I just wanted the actual play to get started, and I thought the costumes added to the humor and circus-like appeal of the play. I thought Clarice did an excellent job of working in her dance "skills" and animal noises. Especially in the scene where she is expressing her suicidal feelings about marrying Federigo. I definitely appreciated the greater-Seattle references they made. For example, when Truffildino saved his two suicidal masters from drowning, using the "Ride the Duck." In parts I thought the play just went over the top and got too ridiculous. The juggling was fun to watch, but for the play, it was just too much like a circus.

I tend to be very critical of plays and although a bunch of you will be very unhappy with what I have to say, they are my thoughts so deal with it. Commedia Dell Arte is not a style of play I really care for. I thought that some of the jokes were funny but overall I thought the play was just presented in an odd fashion. The set which was very well done was perfect for all the left andd right passes of jokery. Maybe I didn't find it overly enjoyable because it was everything opposite than what I had imagined. I thought it would take place in an older time period and have characters presented in a more respectable fashion if that makes sense. Respectable as in more formal gentlemanly characters. I way I have described of doing it would still be funny. I don't know why I cant say the play was excellent, it was probably great for the style. I think that trufflodino was excellent and funny however the screaming and random outbursts was too much for me. I just didn;t like the fact that it was so busy and fast speaking and just all around stupidity. My apologies to those who enjoyed it

I was confused when I was waiting for the show to start. The actors were strolling around, warming up, welcoming people as they came in and just wandering around. It was amusing when Shawn Belyea (master of revels) and Ben Burris (deputy master revels) where going around welcoming people and then shouting out their name and place of living, then receiving applause. I have seen a few other Shakespeare troops but usually people just see some jugglers or nothing at all before the show. So the shouting out of names and towns didn't seem too important, just entertainment for the audience before the show. But then when I realized that some of the towns and names were being used in the performance, I was surprised and found the production more enjoyable. I feel that the whole show of The Servant of Two Master stayed true to Commedia Dell Arte. The stock characters were there and key speeches/lines for the story were present too. But the costumes were random and some of the jokes used were absolutely hilarious just for the fact that they weren't any where near Shakespearean. I enjoyed it so much I might actually have to go see it again. =^.^=

Considering I already took the test, I thought the play was really funny. I enjoyed the humor although I really did not like how they changed the names of the towns. It really confused me and made me lose focus on the story line. Another example was when he saved his masters with the "Ride the Duck"... it was a little over the top for me. The humor and loudness was a great change of pace from the opera's we've been going to and I was happy to sit through this play.

The way that Servant of Two Masters was performed was true to commedia dell arte. The troop was initially a bunch clowns, talking with the audience before hand, joking about the Merchant of Venice, and making it seem like it's a bunch of improv. Too bad personally for me that was a little too much clowning around, plus there was an excessive amount of Truffeldino doing impersonations as well as innuendo. That caliber of entertainment fit with commedia dell arte, along with the stock characters and speeches. It was a good experience to learn about that side of theatre, as well as a nice refreshment from all of the operas in different languages we have been going to, but I am now ready to get back to operas.

The Servant of Two Masters was a much more entertaining and interactive performance than any other we have been to. I thought it was really neat being in such a small theater, especially with the cast running around between sections of the audience and talking with viewers before the show. It was also nice having the actors make references to cities, sports teams and happenings in and around Seattle. Overall I thought the cast did a great job of engaging the audience and playing their characters effectively.

Unknown said...

The servant of two masters was actually alot more funny than i thought it was going to be. it really suprised me how much i actually enjoyed it. The way it was pre-formed also was very interesting. I didnt expect them to act like clowns so much and kind've goof off and do all the funny little clown acts they did like right before intermission.I also liked how they used present day things like president bush to make jokes so that we could relate to them more and how they said places like seattle and woodinville in the play. The only thing I would say I didnt like is how loud it was when they would do the random out burst and screaming. It got a little irritating to me but that might have been because i was tired and didnt feel good. I did find the characters to be funny though and i think that they did do a good job. I also like the set and theater i thought it was really cute and creative. The scene and everything was really fitting and all the little signs they had hanging were funny too. The little theater also gave it more character I think. Overall it was good and i liked it more than i thought i would.

I really enjoyed the play. When we were reading it i was suprised how enjoyable i found it. When we went to see it I was really excited, and was hoping it would be an enjoyable play. My favorite parts was with the Truffaldino and his mishaps. I also thought the actor for this was perfect. His facial expressions and everything was everything I would have imagined. I also liked the sound and music for the play was very well though out. It added a lot to the play as a whole.

"The Servant of 2 Masters" wasn't at all what I expected it to be like. It was a lot funnier than I thought it would be. Many parts of the play were so random, such as the different costumes each character had that didn't match at all with what the others had on. Truffaldino was probably my favorite character, especially during the dinner scene. And I still can't believe he actually chewed up that piece of bread and spit it out! I also liked the juggling and I thought the guy who was in charge of all the sound effects and music did a very good job.

I think this play was definitely the most entertaining performance we’ve been to yet.
It was a funny twist how they were doing the play about doing a play, which gave it a new dimension. I liked the costumes and sets and the fact that they didn’t go together at all. When we were reading the play in class, I found it kind of dry and boring, but the actors, especially the actor playing Truffaldino, and the director made a good job of making it humorous.

I found that the play was done very well. The way that the actors were able to improvise and bring in some current events was very funny, like when the actor playing Florindo started talking about how hot Sara Palin is. I thought that the juggling during the dinner sequence was very good and they really incorporated vaudvillian acting, like the unicycle riding and the multiple Marx bros references. All of the actors were very funny and the play worked well as an improvisational part. I really enjoyed the play and how the action kept moving throughout it. I wasn't expecting the play and the actors to be as funny as they were. It was great.

Overall, I really enjoyed the play. There were definitely moments where I thought the jokes seemed forced and not particularly the best quality of comedy, but there were many parts where I couldn't help but laugh rather loudly. The political and sexual jokes caught me off guard, but the unexpectedness of them added to the humor. I also really enjoyed how the actors interacted with the audience in the beginning of the play, and used someone's name and town in the actual story.

2. Write a review of the play, giving specifics and details, n ot generalizzxed statements.

I really liked how at the beginning of the play the actors would call out peoples names and where they were from then use the names/ places in the play. I really enjoy watching improve because you never know what people are going to say.
The guy who played trufaldino was really good. I think that a lot of the stuff he did was really on the spot because from what I saw, the other actors had a hard time keeping it together. Also I enjoyed Clarice's animal noices when she was pretending to kill herself in between her father and beatrice.
When we went to see the Pearl Fishers I thought it had been the best performance that we had gone to but A servant for two Masters was in my opinion better.

I enjoyed how the play was done, it wasn’t like your normal play in the since of how it was preformed. I thought that how the costumes were different was a good way to some difference in the performance as well. The slapstick comedy was done very well and the actors did a great job. I really didn’t expect it to be as laugh out loud funny but it was. I would recommend to any one to go and see this performance.

Truffledino was very funny like in the begining when he kept putting in lightbulbs or during the scene when he was serving two dinners at once. I also like the touch that they added by having the two directors on stage like when the second director balenced the broom on his head and walked off stage.

"The Servant of Two Masters" was my favorite show we have seen this year! I thought it was very well done. Doing it as if it was an improve show was a clever take to it. You were entertained before the actual show even started. I loved how the actor playing Truffaldino was silently changing light bulbs the entire time and then turned out to be the main character of the show. I loved all of the character choices that the actors made. Clarice with her animal noises and dancing, Silvio's sword, Pantalone with his "grumpy old man" take on life were a few that stood out to me. I thought it was better that Brighella was a female in this script, it seemed to fit more. Truffaldino, Smeraldina and the director's assistant were my two favorite characters. All of the actors used the space that they were given well. I liked how Smeraldina and Truffaldino's costumes were coordinated. His vest was the same pattern as some of the fabric in her maid's outfit. I also liked how they used the stage. Each scene was in the same space, but the actors made it work as well as the props they used. I also liked how they used the names of cities in Washington instead of weird ones we wouldn’t know of. It was a well done show and I would love to see it again!

servent of two masters was my favorite event that we have gone to so far. i was entertained from the moment i stepped foot in there. i really liked how they had things going on before the play even started and the people were in charactor and how they were asking ppl their names and then they would randomly throw in an audience members name in the play here and there. i also really enjoyed how it was all improv and not like normal plays where every line is memorized. one of my favorite parts was when brighella and silvio were talking about what they were going to make for dinner and all the sudden the lights dimmed and the music came on. i found that one of the funniest parts of the play was when those two were left alone anywhere and the same music would come on and the lights would dim. i was non stop laughing the whole play and i liked that too. i also usually dont like when the scene never changes in the background, but i liked this one how it didnt change and the set always stayed the same but you didnt even notice that much because the actors worked so good with it. this was the best play i've seen and i would definitely go see it again.

I wasn't able to attend the performance on Saturday, but I saw the matinee today. I didn't really know what to expect from the performance since I missed a lot of class when we talked about it so I pretty much read up on it on my own and referred to the notes that were taken. It was a lot funnier then I was expecting and loved the addition of modern jokes/puns especially politically. I thought the theatre itself, the size and how small it was made the play really interesting because it felt very personal. Having the actors walk past me in the aisle and be so close added a really interesting element then having them so far away like at the opera house. The set was pretty basic but was used by the actors really well, especially the windows and saying lines through them. Some of the acting could be considered a bit over the top, but I think that for the style and play it worked well.

The version we saw of “The Servant of two Masters” was a really good play in my opinion. I really didn’t think it was going to be a comedy, but then when the actors started to say “Commedia Del Arte” I knew it was going to be good. The punch lines were really funny most of the time, and the sections where Silvio was playing with his sword were absolutely hilarious. However there were some times they were trying just a little too hard. The most obvious one was the final scene before intermission where Truffildino went on and on about something and the whole cast was juggling random objects. Another thing I didn’t like was the fact that the theater was so small. It really wasn’t hard to hear the actors but they yelled anyway and I had a lady sitting behind me that cackled at EVERYTHING! Nevertheless, I thought this was a good play, and even though it got tedious at times, it was still a great comedy, and the best play I’ve seen so far.

But on the other hand, there were times when they were tryingt o hard to be funny and overdoing it. But there were some things that i thought were really funny such as once Silvio lost his sword he took the umbrella and put it in his sheath. Brighella was a whore. Anotyher funny thing was when they brought Sara Palin into the picture and randomly just yelled Sara Palin is hot. Overall it was a good play

Mr. Schindler was right when he said that reading "The Servant of Two Masters" in class didn't do justice to how the play really would turn out. I thought that the performance on Saturday was hilarious and thoroughly entertaining but reading it in class was dull. Even though the play is a comedy of the classic commedia dell arte style, I wasn't expecting what we saw. I was surprised when I found I was laughing almost the entire time. The way the actors incorporated jokes about Washington State and added Mr. Schindler's name into the script made it more personal and funny. I also liked how the stage was so close to the actors. It made the room seem louder than other performances but it made the characters movements a lot easier to see, which I liked. Furthermore, I thought that the guy who played the accordion, keyboard, and guitar when Brighella talked was a cool touch. Overall I think the only part that I didn’t like was the lady who laughed really loud at every joke, so this was an amazing performance.

I have one positive thing to say about the Servant of Two Masters, and one negative. The negative thing was all of the local references. The "deafer than a pearl jam fan" and the Christine gregiour lines really brought the performance down. The thing that I loved were the back and forths between Truffeldino and Fenolio (or whatever his name was).
