Jan 26-Feb 2 Review or Art History

This week again you can write either one of two responses.
1. If you did not review the play on last week's blog, you may write about the production of The Servant of Two Masters we attended. OR
2. Write about one of the art history movements that you particularly like and tell why.

I thought the production we saw was pretty over the top, but I still thought it was good. I liked the changing of Brighella from male to female, but I thought some of her musical interactions with Truffaldino were borderline ridiculous. I thought Truffaldino did a good job throughout the entire thing, except the ending was a little weird, as you could tell by the delayed applause - it didn't really seem like an ending. My favorite character was probably Florindo, just because of the character the actor brought to the role. I also thought Beatrice was pretty convincing as a man, and thought that how carefree she became after her identity was discovered was interesting. The famous 'kitchen scene' could have been done better, I thought. When reading it in class even, there was a sense of urgency, but it didn't really carry through to the production. The choice of the director to make it so flamboyant was both good and bad, making it very entertaining but a little childish. I also liked the relating things to Seattle, though I thought it was a little too much, as if they were a band giving a shout out to the city they were playing. As a whole, I liked the play, and liked the novelty of going to a comedy in Humanities - it kept my attention better.

The production that we saw on Saturday was hilarious and probably the most exciting to attend. The only bad thing i think i can say about it was that at some points it got a little overwhelming. I understood that there was improv acting throughout the whole thing, yet at times it could have been sharper, like at the ending. my favorite character was Beatrice because i felt that she nailed her role as a man and it was exciting to watch her throughout the play. I do regret getting there late (do to parking issues) because i had to watch on the big screen until intermission and i felt that being in the actual theater would have been vital. Overall the play was exciting and i enjoyed the experience. i can honestly say that is the smallest professional theater i will ever be in!

I thought the production of "Servant of Two Masters" was amazing. It was probably the best performance I have seen thus far in class. Even though it was over the top, it fit all of the characters in a comedic way. I don't know if I could choose a favorite character however. I really enjoyed Truffaldino, he did an amazing job with his acting. On the other hand, Beatrice did a really good job on being a man as well. Smeraldina wasn't quite what I had imagined as we were reading the play however she fit the role well enough. As Tess said, the ending could have been sharper, but it got the point across. It was also interesting how they used Seattle and Woodinville in the play. I was a little confused by this but it was improv, and I understand that. Overall I really enjoyed this production and would of course, see it again.

So basically, i really liked the production of "A Servant of Two Masters". Like no lie, when they was talkin about the Venice production, i was kinda scared cuz i thought we went to the wrong theater n i was gunna be pissed that i had to sit through a whole play that wouldnt give me credit. But i thought that the production was really great, i kinda didnt like the dinner scene as much as i though i would, but it was really funny, with Truffaldino running around and the girl that played the 2nd server oh, and Smerelda was funny, being all sad and always having something sarcastic to say. Yeah i liked all the characters, Clarice was kinda annoyin me though, like she was good at acting annoying, but she was just too annoying, you know what i mean? the part where the Director guy was talking about what a comedy was and the guy that had all the dishes and then like balanced the broom on his chin, that was really i dont know what chu call the word i'm looking for. but anyways, oh i also thought it was funny that the actors would use names from around Seattle and people in the audience and i loved how the actors interacted with the audience and made it more silly and more enjoyable to watch. dude like i loved the whole thing pretty much, like i didnt have to read a teleprompter or try really hard to pay attention and not go to sleep, so yeah, it was easier to watch. the windows and how people would pop in and out of them and say a little something and just slam it back. But yeah..what else? dude i think thats it..ok bai

I really like the "Servant of Two Masters" but I came into the play just wanted something to make me laugh so I was expecting much and thats why I liked the play more than other people. I thought it was hilarious when Truffaldino was changing the lights for about twenty minutes. I was laughing so hard as he did it over and over again that I missed most of the beginning. The musician was amazing and I was just waiting for him to pull out another instrument. He had an accordion, guitar with some sweet effects, piano, and the stage manager also played trumpet. I think that added to the production because they did not use recorded music. I also like the scene when everyone was showing off their talents and everyone was juggling and Florindo had a marionette of himself. Hilarious! I also loved Dr. Lombardi and then he would shout his name, "STEVEN GRENLEY!" after every line and it reminded me of you, Mr Schindler when we were reading it in class.

I thought the production "the servant of the two masters" was really good. They made me laugh when I enter the theater. I thought they just made people not boring to wait when they shouting and asked people about name and where they are from. But during the play, I was surprised about Truffaldino memorised all the list of people and pronounced it. I thought the actors who were in that play is Pro. No lie. Some part was disgusting and annoying but it was fun.

the servant of two masters was nothing like what i was expecting it to be. I was thinking it was going to stick to the words of the play we read in class. The production was a lot more funny then what i thought it was going to be. But sometimes i felt that it was TOO funny. I really like how they used the names and places of people in the audience i thought that was a really good idea and they did a really good job with it. But overall i liked it and i wish i could go again.

my favorite art history peroid would have to be post modernism. I like this peroid the most because it basically is a mix of eveything. They put pretty much most everything that dosnt fit in any other catigory and put it in post moderism. This is really interesting to me because it really dosnt have any set giudelines for the catigory which i like because it is unpredictable and you never know what the next piece of work will look like.

I'm gonna write about the play since I didn't do that last week...
Anyway I thought it was the best/most entertaining piece of art that we have been to all year. It was really funny, especially since it did use some of the audience's input. For some reason though, Clarice really bugged me most of the time. She just seemed annoying. But the entire production was a success, and it was funny when some of the characters would pop out of nowhere.
I also liked how the swing doors worked, and how people would continuously go in and out of them. Or how you could hear conversations backstage.

The beginning was also pretty funny.

I will write a review of the play since I didn't last blog entry.

I loved the play and thought it was pretty funny. All of the characters were very entertaining, especially Dr. Lombardi with his random out breaks out the shuttered windows. The only character I found annoying was Clarice, she took it too far most of the time, especially with the animal sounds. I thought all the sexual references were random but funny. Brighella was hot haha.
I loved how the characters stayed in character the whole play and prior to it. It was interesting how they would call out names and introduce people in the crowd. It was cool how they acted like they were supposed to preform a different play, so it seemed like it was improvised completely.

I don't care who ya r, the servant of two masters was funny. I actually thought we were in the wrong theater before the play started, which is kind of embarresing. I also tried to keep a straight face for as long as i could throughout the play, but it didnt take long for me to crack a smile. I was pretty entertained and shocked at how well they acted, especially with the improv. My favorite character was definatly truffaldino, he was really funny. The play was baller and i loved it.

The art period that I found most interesting was futurism. I had never heard of futurism before and I think it is really interesting how they can show the motion of an object through painting or sculpture. Most art is just a representation of a moment in time but futurism conveys a movement from one moment to another. I especially like the futurist sculptures, even though they look like lame blobs, if you really look at it and think about it, they show and trace the movement of the object through time and I think that it is very interesting.

I loved the play!!! I thought it was the highlight of this year in Humanities. Yes, it was a little over the top, but I loved every bit of it. My favorite character was Dr. Lombardi. I loved each of his scenes, especially the one when he randomly popped out of the windows and yell out his name. I also enjoyed the collaboration between Truffeldino and Florindo. For example the trunk scene when Truffeldino found the underwear and Florindo stuck it down his pants in a very awkward way. It was also funny when Silvio had his sworn taken away and replaced it with an umbrella. Overall, I loved the play and hope that I will get the opportunity to see it again.

My favorite art movement was definitely impressionism. I paint, and that is the style I like to paint in the most. I particularly like how impressionists pay such close attention to light, and how they use tiny little blotches of color, and brush strokes to create the painting. I think the overall look of impressionist paintings are the most beautiful to look at. And I also like how their paintings don't necessarily look real. In my opinion, if you want something to look real, you should just take a photograph.

I love pop art. In my art history class we sometimes go over culture jamming urban art, which is a form of pop art. Pop art is what I believe to be the most uniquely vast form of art, since you can do it anywhere, and anything goes. The pieces seem to connect to people more since most pop art is more widely distributed to the public, as I believe art was meant to be.

The art history movement that i particularly like is Pop art because it can be made by many of the things that we surround ourself with each day. I really like the paintings of the soup cans by Andy Warhol and the fact that he did each of the different kinds of soup. Artists can be inspired by anything from comic strips to images from television and its interesting to see what kinds of things that they come up with. I also like this art movement because I didn't know much about it before we talked about each of the art periods. Along with pop art i also like cubism because it's cool how artists incorporate geometric shapes into a piece of art to create work that is interesting to look at and is different than ordinary art.

Unknown said...

The one art area I like the most would probbaly be pop art. I think I like this one the most because it the newest one or closest to our era right now. I like the cartoon animation of the pictures and I like how they are original overproducted things that we see all the time but just changed a little. I have no idea why this art is more attractive to me than the others but it must be the look that is has.Th pictures are all commercial things and I like how they just change them a little to make it into art like the mickey mouse statue or the soup cans. They take ordinary things and turn them into art and I find it creative.

We went to the play the servent of two masters this week. I was somewhat suprised during this play because it wasnt exactly what I imagined it to be. I had some what of an impression that this play was going to be more formal like elekctra or the pearl fishers. One cool thing about the play we went to was that the incorperated things about seattle in it. I liked when they talked about the bon marche. These types of things made the production more fulfilling and made it seem like I was getting a better understanding of it. One complaint that i had about the play was that it was somewhat like a circus. All of the juggling and the throwing things back and forth made it seem a bit odd. Overall this production was good and i enjoyed it.

One of my favorite art history movements was the expressionism period. I find this movement so interesting because I truly enjoy being able to see the artists interior attitude. Often times artists are depressed or angry and use their art as an outlet. Although it may appear weird or unappealing to many it often has such greater meaning to the artist and has a lot of underlying concepts. The art during this time was often distorted and contained unnaturalistic forms. I hope to see and learn more about art during the expressionism period through our studies.

The play we went to (The servant of two masters) last saturday was absolutley great. I thought it was deifnitley one of the best so far. I say this becuase first it was really funny and not boring. there was constant movement and action with humor in the play which made it better. The servant was great. He was really funny and great at acting. Overall it was really funny and i liked how they acted like they were going to do a different show at first. I kind of believed them. It was great and we really need to see another one like this.

I really enjoyed the play that we went and saw. I think they put good comedy into it although it could definitely been a little over the top sometimes. It was something different from the operas and other plays that are more serious and a little less attention grabbing. Not one time this play did I even want to go to sleep. Although I was very surprised at how dirty it was and didn't go around it anyway. The servant of two masters and Florendo were my favorite because they worked so well off each other and they were just a funny duet.

the movement that i like the most is impressionism. i am familiar with many impressionism paintings now that i know the descriptions of them. i like this movement because it is simple, but not too simple, and its not boring at the same time. i like that one of the main fucus' is color. i like paintings that have good shading and color, but at the same time i also like that they use blotches of color and strokes in them as well so the paintings aren't perfect lines and stuff. i also love the outdoors and i like looking at paintings of the outdoors and with this movement that is one main thing that they focused on as well was outdoor pictures.

I was really surprised by A Servant of Two Masters. I had never seen a production that had so much improvisation, and I liked how it was different from the more structured things I have seen. The way that the characters interacted, especially Truffaldino and Florindo who were my two favorite. On the spot they thought up funny remarks that had to do with people in the audience and Seattle. This kind of personalization made it really fun to watch because it was something that the original version did not have. The funny quarks that each character had were even more hilarious however. The way in which Florindo entered the room with his leg up in the air was so funny. It was the combination of a lot of these small things that made the production so funny. That is why it is my opinion that a production of commedia del arte depends almost completely on the ability of the actors and very little on the actual funniness of the written script [although that was a funny scenario]. The written words and the script itself were nothing out of the ordinary or different from other things, but the way the actors did it and added on to it made it very funny.

A Servant of Two Masters was a lot funnier then I was expecting and loved the addition of modern jokes/puns especially politically. I thought the theatre itself, the size and how small it was made the play really interesting because it felt very personal. Having the actors walk past me in the aisle and be so close added a really interesting element then having them so far away like at the opera house. The set was pretty basic but was used by the actors really well, especially the windows and saying lines through them. Some of the acting could be considered a bit over the top, but I think that for the style and play it worked well.

I thought that the production we saw was pretty entertaining. Its not exactly my kind of comedy but I definately have respect for anyone who can pull improv out on stage like they did. I understand the interactions of the play and some parts made me laugh but it was more of a goofy comedy which I dont exactly care for. Everyone up there did a great job though so props to them.

My favorite art history piece was Pop Art. I think I like this the most because I relate to it better because it's from my era. The many different art pieces such as cartoons, tomato soups, inpiration by television, movies, just everything is so unbelieveably cool. The way they make everyday things into art by twiking them just a bit is amazing.

Megan Lowry said...

My favorite era of art that we're studying is impressionism. I think it's unique because it doesn't seek to capture what something looks like or even what it means, but more what something seems to be. It's interesting looking at Monet and other artists works, because they seem like memories. When you remember something, you don't remember exactly how it looked or all the details, but you remember glimpses of how things were. Thats what impressionistic works look like, they don't define images or events, they're just the artists perception. I guess I like this art more than other kinds because thats how I think, in impressions.

I am really enjoying the art history part 2 project because I love modern art. My favorite movement is impressionism. I have loved Monet for years and have many books about him. I wish to someday visit his home and gardens in France. I loved how he used just blobs of color that create such life, especially in his gorgeous water lillies. I also love learning about the abstract artisits because we just started abstract painting in my advanced art class and as you mentioned in class, it isn't as easy at it looks.

My favorite art movement of art history part II is surrealism. I like the idea that the movement is based upon the exploration of the unconscious mind and that the artist is seeking a way to express their innermost being, the ultimate truth. I am a fervent dreamer so i also appreciate that the art is often whimsical and appears to be created in a dream-like state. In addition, Salvador Dali is one of my favorite artists of all time and is one of the most recognizable surrealist painters. I attribute my attraction to the surrealist period in part to him.

I found that in reading about each period of modern art for our Art History: Part II project, the most intriguing periods to me were Fauvism and Surrealism. These two struck me the most because each were focused on extremes of one sort or another. Fauvism struck me because of its sole direction was to use immensely bright colors in the depiction landscapes or whatever else they were painting. I found surrealism striking because the artist combines the real world with the dream world when making a piece. This sense of hallucination or perception of a super reality is mesmerizing to look at which is why I like I like it. The movements aim to detach from the dominance of reason and release primitive urges and imagery is interesting to say the least.

Looking through and reading about all the syles and periods of art I have found that I most enjoy neo-impressionism. The way artist used small dots of color to paint a larger picture is amazing. It is said, althought I have never seen a true painting in the style, that if you stand close you would see just a smearing of color and undistinguishable images, however by standing back one is able to see the entire picture almost as clear as if it had been painted by strokes. It is this te4chnique of painting I would really like top see up close. Just from looking online I think my favorite painting of this period would be A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. I have coffee mugs with that painting but I cant see the dots.

My favorite art period is Superrealism. It is so amazing to me when you see a painting and at first glance, think it can be nothing other than a photograph, then to find out it is an extremely detailed painting. Photography fascinates me, as well as painting, and this art style combines both. I also love paintings with minute details so that you can see the big picture, but as you look closer, there is so much more to see.

In the servant of two masters production that we saw, my favorite part was Truffaldino. I thought he was really funny, even if he was a bit over the top. I think he was funniest when he was with Florindo. Whenever the two of them had a conversation it was almst always hilarious and you could kind of tell that they caught eachother off guard a few times since it was improvised dialogue (like the Swedish dyslexic sheep joke, which actually had Truffaldino break down laughing in the trunk). I also liked how funny thier body language was, with Truffaldino's facial expressions and Florindo's wierd leaning back step that he did whenever he was about to exit.

Overall I thought the Servant of Two Masters was very funny and entertaining. However I thought that, especially in the first act, they started to go over the top with some of their jokes and their physical comedy. In the second act they toned their jokes down a bit which made it more enjoyable. Probably one of my favorite scenes was the trunk scene because you could tell that they were ad-libbing which made it genuinely funny. Honestly I think the play would have been funny if they had just done it the way it was written instead of modernizing it and altering it. Overall it was very funny and entertaining.

Truffaldino was great and same with Florindo, I think thats who it was. But yes i liked the production very much.

My favorite movement by far is Impressionism. I love this movement the most particularly because Monet and Renoir are my favorite artists. Last summer I went to a lot of art museums and their work really caught my eye. I love their impression of the atmosphere around them. What I enjoyed the most was standing close and seeing the blotchy brush strokes of color. Then standing far off and just seeing the main picture. I was quite an experience for me, and I'll always remember it. I also used to take art lessons from my grandmother and this style was her favorite. That is why I am very excited to write about this art movement.

I've looked at a few impressionist peices so far and the lighting and color is what strikes me the most. Sunshine is my absolute favorite thing, and when it's reflected in the paintings its absolutely goregous. I hope as I continue on my Art project I will find more that I enjoy aswell.

Out of the movements we have studied so far in the art history project II. I would have to say that I like the Cubism movement the most. I love the way the shapes are combined to make a complete picture. In junior high art I remember having to draw a picture using the cubism technique. It was really hard so I also admire the artists who were able to use the cubism method. I also like mosaics; although I’m not sure what movement it comes from. For example the one i have seen of a movie poster for Casablanca.

I really like the post impressionist movement in art history part 2. The pointalism is an extremely interesting idea because it draws upon our mind's natural tendencies to blend the color pixels together in order to see a solid color. The pointalism shows that while we see a solid color, the color is not solid and it is just an illusion of uniformity. If you look closely at a painting done in this style it is obvious that the painter simply uses squares of different colors and relies entirely on our minds to enterpret the colors. I find this movement extremely fascinating and I think it really calls into question the properties that we normally take for granted, like the uniformity of color in a painting.

I thought that it was very interesting how much of the play they were improvising. i noticed a few times that the actors broke out of character. for example when truffildino was in the trunk/box and florindo was doing all the knock knock jokes. Or when silvio was going on and on with his swinging sword, beatrice broke character at some of the things he was saying. i thoroughly enjoyed this production and want to see it again. I liked the play the servant of two masters. The thing I liked the most was the beginning when they were pretending that they were doing another play and they brought the audience into it. I actually felt like I was in it and it was really funny to watch. I thought they did this type of play very well and made it modern. Like when they where saying all the cities names like when they said woodinville. I also thought it was really cool that they knew who was in the croud like us and that other lady. All of the periods interest me and are very enjoyable to to study in comparison to the first period. Particularly, i like pop art. Pop art is so creative and proves you can make art out of anything and it can be beautiful. Also i love expressionism. I love the movement and the different things that can come out of it. It's so interesting to look at and to think about what the meaning actually is behind it. That is one thing that i like about Art history part II, is that is seems like most of the periods are so mysterious, art that could mean anything and it makes your mind really go in different directions.

It was the first time any artists tried to change what people thought about art. Instead of just being another imitation of what you see with your eyes in front of you they took what they felt at the moment. It all has this beautiful feeling behind it, it's a moment in time. It is things that our mind thinks of on it's own. It isn't brought on by our own intellect but by events that trigger parts of our imagination then it is tweaked by human nature. I think this form of art is great because it can help not only our visual pleasures but also our information into the dream world.

Abstract Art:
I like this art because it is so put together but not put together at the same time. This style is appealing to me because of how off the wall it is and not a lot of people understand it and i feel the same way about myself; i am not well understood and i am very off the wall but i am my own art form. Just like Pollock, everyone says they could do that but no one can be anything but themselves and abstract is the same way. Every time you look at a piece you may see something new each time but it still never changes, and just like a person, every time you talk to someone you learn something new each time.

An art history movement that interest me is impressionism. Impressionism is a painting of a moment/impression in time. I love how they use visible brush strokes instead of blending the colors together to make the image more realistic. The colors reflect the feeling of the painting. Also impressionism uses a lot of light to emphasize the time of day. I like the way it looks at a glance. I believe it is true art with its own characteristics.

The art period that I particularly liked is neo-impressionism. I especially liked this because it stands out from all the other periods. The paintings consisted by thousands of colored dots, giving the illusion of an image.
I also liked the way the artists mixed the paint on the actual painting instead of mixing them together before hand and the way neo-impressionists used color and lights to express their feelings.

A style that started in 1900 and had a major comeback in the late 60's is social realism. It is by far my favorite style. I love that it can be either depressing or satirical in nature. It can be ironic or literal, but it always calls for social reform. It is still used to show American hypocrisy when it comes to equality. On the flip side, it is also used to show Chinese hypocrisy concerning capitalism. Social realism is meant to challenge the current powers and give a voice to the people.

I thought the servant of two masters play was hilarious. I thought the servant at first would play a small roll in the play just changing lights that would go out over and over. I was happy he was a main charecter. Also i like how they used well know landmarks and citys, it made the play feel like the actors really knew what they were doing. I thought the girl in the yellow dress was for the most part a whore and very annoying. i am very happy that i got to see this play

My favorite art period would be pop art, the colors they use are different and more interesting to me, I enjoy the comic art that the artist used and it showed that simple things like stuff used in advertisements and comics could make itself an art period.

Of the modern art history movements that I have looked into, Fauvism is one that caught my interest. Simply because of the bright, vivid intensity of the colors that are used. In the pictures that I saw, they weren't necessarily the most precise and detailed, however I liked the idea that it looked like a type of painting I could do myself some random afternoon.

My favorite art periods are pop art and op art. Pop art seems to be a dominant form of artwork in our current era and therfore I can relate to it. The Cambells Soup cans done by Warholl are very well known images. Also, Op Art is interesting because it is basically optical illusions created by colors and lines. This type of art is more entertaining to the human eye than the other art forms. Possibly because the feeling of movement within the art is much stronger.

This week, I am going to tell you about one of my favorite art movemnets. To me, my favorite movement of this section is surrealism. Last semester I did a project on Salvador Dali who was a surrealist painter and I loved doing that project because the art he made was just so interesting. The way that all the surrealist painters like to paint things that aren't real is very interesting to me. Another reason why I like this movement is that they paint things that are just so ridiculous, they have to come out of a dream. No one could actually think of some of the things they paint about.

I like the abstract art movement mainly. This is mostly because the work that is shown is special in its own way. Many people look at abstract art and they say that it isn’t art or that they could do the same, which I find untrue. These peaces of art are unique because people who see objects, and the world around them differently paint them. This s why I find these types of art they most interesting solely on the fact of trying to figure out what the artist was trying to say.

The most interesting Art History Movement that we have studied so far would be Cubism. This movement emphasizes color, shape and structure which make images very sharp, appealing and real in appearance. Cubism generated a great interest in abstract art and was concerned with depicting ideas instead of observing reality. Although many works of this period have a realistic edge to them, they often show far fetched or abstract ideas.
