Write about one of the following three prompts:
Write about the music we listened to for the ballet.
Or, write a quote down from A Midsummer Night's Dream and discuss the quote in terms of what it means in the play.
Or, write about what you liked about the tour of the opera house.

The music we listened to in class was very different. The first one I felt was a little bit too repetitive to keep someone interested. Although with dance and something going on it might keep people more interested in it. I enjoyed the second piece of music a lot better. It seemed to keep it's energy even when it was in a slow and quite section. And to a musician you can tell that they did a good job because it is hard to play soft and keep the energy and keep the audience actively listening. I also liked drawing the pictures with the music!

I absolutely LOVED the music we listened to in class. I really enjoy jazz and am into that kinda music so when we listening in class I just wanted to get up and dance. Listening to jazz music made me more excited for the ballet because before then I really had no idea what the ballet was about. The other kind of music we listened to was intense and made me feel like I was watching an action movie. Although I liked both, I liked the jazz more!

I enjoyed the two music samples we listen to in class. I like how we got to draw our emotions of how the song felt to us, so we could get a better visual of the music. the first song made me feel like drawing abstract while the second song elt more like a story. I enjoyed this activitiy.

"Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind,
And therefore is wing'd Cupid painted blind."
This quote is from Helena. She is talking about love and how it feels. She is saying that love is blind but it listens to feeling from the mind. Love and Cupid are related because Cupid is the god of love and he puts people together. Cupid cannot follow what people see in eachother but how they make eachother feel due to the lack of sight.

I thought that the music we listened to in the class from the ballet was a very good adventure music. I think that the music suits the play very well in seeing the video i realize that the music is kind of sporatic and that makes complete sence saying as though the play is a bit weird. Also as you could tell by my pirate drawing it was a great adventure music. I really hope you read my blog because I think its really good. Also, I believe that This opera will be very interesting because watching the movie was very weird. But not a bad weird but a weird that you say "hey, I think this could be interesting but in a messed up way" so I truley am feeling that right now. Im kind of excited to see the ballet but at the same time i know that the diraector could make it really weird and stuff.

In class, the music for the ballet was very different from what I thought it would sound like. I thought it would be music that was easy to dance to. Something that had a nice soft beat and wasn't so repetitive. The first piece we listened to was interesting at first. But after about 3 minutes of the same tune going over and over again, it gets a little boring. Then, the second piece was much better to pay attention to because it was much more exciting. Though the piece was longer than the first one, its beat was faster and there was more going on then just repetitive verses of music. But, the second one would be very hard to dance to because it is so fast and interesting. I would like to see how the dancers end up dancing to it and also, how the musicians end up doing with pieces as difficult as these two.

The tour of the opera house was very interesting. I enjoyed being able to go all around the opera house and see it from different points of veiw. My favorite part of the tour was meeting the prop guy and having him show us how they pull of the stunts during different shows. The stage looks so much bigger when you actually get to stand by it and dont have to sit so far away. Our tour guide was Seneca so that was very fun too because he knew who we were. Another interesting aspect of the tour was that for the show that they were putting on that night, the stage is actually like a swimming pool because they have 500 gallon tanks to look like a river of blood. That was fun to think about..
Overall the tour was well worth while and I am glad i got the chance to go!

I have really enjoyed the music that we have been listening to in class this week. Sometimes its hard for me to pay attention to reading storys because i get distracted, but with music it jst kinda brings me in. This music is very upbeat and is a party in my head. I have also really enjoyed how we draw our thoughts while listening to the music. This is a good way for me to pay better attention and get all that i can out of it. Drawing makes me understand what the music is doing and the significane of it. I Will be really excited to see what the ballet has to offer us in person.

I had two favorite parts from the opera house. One of my favorite parts was the crazy chandelier hanging in the entrance. The chandelier reminds me of an extreme roller coaster. It is a very fun, lively piece with all of its randomness. I wish I could have been apart of constructing the chandelier. My second favorite part of the opera house was the Prop Man, Pete. I liked this part of the opera house because first, Pete was very funny, and second, I thought it was very interesting that the prop team makes all of their own props. It is was also interesting to hear how the prop men play their part in the performances and the stresses and fun that they experience in every performance.
I liked the music we listened to in class on Monday since i wasn't here on Friday to listen to it. I am interested to see how they are going to make it more modern and still have it be a Ballet. I haven't been to see more of a dance type of performance in a long time so it should be good. I also like watching dance more so I should be more interested. This piece that we listened to had more liveliness to it and seemed like it got intense and the slowed down. So i liked how it would change and it wasnt the same thing over and over. The variety makes it alot nicer to listen to and it also makes it easier to pay attention because there is always something new your hearing. I am excited to see the ballet.

I dont have the exact quote but when Oberon and Puck are talking about the flower shot by Cupid, the whole story is very interesting and if i knew more about greek or ancient myths, im sure i would know all about Oberon and the story he tells.

The tour of the opera house was really interesting. It was a unique experience to be able to go backstage and see everything from a perspective I normally wouldn't have been able to. Seeing the orchestra pit, backstage, the numerous rooms such as the donor rooms and dressing suites, seeing the props, and even going up into the boxes were all fun experiences. Our group's tour guide was a very friendly and talkative person who had a lot to say about everything, which was pretty helpful. The only thing that I was disapointed about were the lack of activity that was going on, and that we didn't get to see very much of the costumes. It would have been cool to see the opera workers in action, and even though we briefly looked at a costume display we did not get to go back to their storeroom or see very much of that.

I loved going to the opera house and did not have one dull moment while on the field trip. One of my favorite parts was going up to the stage and getting to see the stage and the high ceiling. I loved going backstage and seeing all the illusions on the stage. It was so interesting to see that the opera actually used water and food dye to make the ending scene come alive. I also liked meeting the the prop master and playing with all of his fake weapons. I also really liked learning about the art piece in the lobby since I had be wondering about it since the last opera.

I thought the music we listen to in the class for the ballet was alright. I personally liked the first one we listened to better because it had more solo parts and sounded more like a jazz music which I enjoy. The second song we listen to was kind of random at some point and it made me feel kind of weird. Drawing pictures while listening to this music was fun however. I thought people drew a lot of cool pictures. I liked a lot of them.

I liked the tour of the opera house. I was worried when I heard that there may be other schools, because I thought it would be hard to listen, and to focus. I really liked, then, how they broke us into small groups so it was more personal, we could have casual conversations, and ask questions. My tour guide was the college student who volunteers at the Opera house, and you could really tell he enjoys the subject, and giving tours. My favorite section was probably talking to Jonathan Dean, who was very entertaining and personable. I was surprised that the booth was so small, and that rather than timing the titles, that they are switched through live. I also liked the backstage tour, especially the props, and the tour of the audience section. I didn't, however, care too much about the tour of the room for people who contribute, it didn't really tell me anything and it was pretty boring.
Gabe Gonzalez Period 2
I thought the music we listened to in class was really catchy and got a lot of people excited for the ballet. I never really pictured jazz music as being part of a ballet, however it was certainly enjoyable to listen to. For me, this piece of music was a little bit repetitive and straightforward, and kind of lost its appeal after fifteen minutes. So hopefully when we see it performed at the theater it will feature more energy and variety.
Michelle Le, period 6
I definitely preferred the jazz piece to the other piece of music we listened to during class. It was very fun and I can't wait to see how the dancers are going to dance to it. I haven't seen them rehearsing to either of those pieces of music so I have no idea like everybody else what they are going to do. I don't think pnb has ever danced to either of these pieces so it'll be new to their repertoire. The jazz music sounded like it would be very fun to dance to. I wasn't the biggest fan of the other piece, but maybe I'll change my mind when we watch the ballet.
Jessica Karr, p.4
This music we listened to in class was reminiscent of certain time periods, but also changed up a bit throughout the song. At certain parts it reminded me of a medieval period, and others it seemed to border on classical, while at the same time being a jazz piece. I really enjoyed the drum sequence that was obviously improvised, but at the same time was entertaining and showed how much the musicians enjoyed playing the music.

TITANIA: "Set your heart at rest:
The fairy land buys not the child of me.
His mother was a votaress of my order:
..........
But she, being mortal, of that boy did die;
And for her sake do I rear up her boy,
And for her sake I will not part with him."
The quote above was in response to Oberon's suggestion that Titania give him the little boy she carries with her. The quote discusses her reasoning for not giving the boy up, which is essentially due to the fact that his mother was a close friend of Titania's and after the womans death she took the boy as her own. The quote itself is not very telling but the Oberon's desire to take the boy and Titania's refusal explains a significant amount of the tension and jealousy set between the two of them.

“Night and silence.--Who is here?
Weeds of Athens he doth wear:
This is he, my master said,
Despised the Athenian maid;”-Puck
This quote from A Midsummer Night’s Dream shows how the confusion in the woods starts. Puck is going around the woods drugging people with the magic flower and he confuses Lysander with Demetrius. He wasn’t expected to see any other human beings in the forest like the ones he was described to cast the spell upon and so the plot gets very mixed up at this point in the play. Lysander falls madly in love with Helena because of Puck’s spell, and Hermia is cast aside. Then the fairies try to remedy the problem and cast the spell on Demetrius as well. This creates a huge mess, because people are falling in love with each other while they are running through the forest and getting in fights. The whole mess starts when Puck makes this small mistake and takes Lysander for Demetrius.

Write about the music we listened to for the ballet;
I thought that the music that we listened to in class was very cool in the fact that there were very clear and noticeable motifs in them, however most of the song was improvised. The way the musicians are able to just come up with that stuff on the spot, all together, and still make it sound good was beyond me. The music overall was also very creative and I can see how some of the abstract art represents things like this because like music its completely open to interpretation.
Tia Bailey P.4
I dont remember the exact quote, but my favorite part was when Oberon was talki ng to Puck and explaining to him about his plan to put thecupd juiceon Titanias eyes and make her fall in love with the first creature she sees. I really like thispart because it is through this flower that the whole play turns into a comedy and a web of randomness, betrayal and mistaken love.
I really enjoyed the tour of the opera house; At first I thought that it was going to be kind of boring and so I was hesitant on going but when we got there I liked how they split us into smaller groups. That made it way more fun and more personal cause we could ask our guide questions and whoever was talking to us whether it be out guide, or Jonathan or Pete(?) the props guy, could like talk more directly to us rather than a large group.
I really liked how when we were touring the opera house we got to see the little room in the top of the opera house where the wordsw projector was and stuff, although that room was alot smaller than I imagined it to be. I also liked how we got to view backstage.. It was a whole lot bigger up close than it appears from the 2nd tier where we usually sit.

The music we listened to in class was very interesting. I liked it better than the fist music we listened to. What makes it so interesting is the fact that it's considered jazz music. Before these pieces were brought up in class, i never would have thought they would be considered jazz. The jazz that im used to is played with a saxaphone. I'm looking forward to this next performance because I have never been to a ballet and I feel it could be interesting.

The quote I chose from A Midsummer Night's Dream is "the course of true love never did run smooth". In the play, this is Lysander talking to Hermia. The quote basically means that even though a love might be strong, it doesn't mean that it will be easy, which is basically what the entire play is about. Even though Hermia and Lysander are in love, lots of things get in thier way when they are trying to stay together. For example, Lysander being bewitched by the flower, Hermia's father trying to keep them apart, and Demetrius chasing after Hermia. However, in the end, everyone ends up with who they were meant to be with, even if getting there wasn't so easy.

I enjoyed the music we listened to in class because it gave me a sense of relaxation. Some of it was pretty repetitive but the rest sounded smooth. I was pretty much fading in and out while hearing it. Im definately looking forward to this next ballet were about to see it should be pretty cool.

Although ita difficult to recall the rhythm and melody of the music we listened to I do remember what I drew and the significance of each thing. When I first set about drawing what I heard I found this second piece was much more difficult to draw for. My initial drawing took the shape of clouds and I from those I had water flowning over the clouds down to an earthyly shape. It seemed to me that the music was fluid and that it would stream in a way that had it flowing toward a goal. The picture in many respects was upside down because the floew of the music became greater however the picture portrays it becoming lesser. I thought that the drums sounded in a way like water pounding the ground, metal rooves (roofs sp?), or ceramic pottery. In my mind this doesn;t sound like ballet music however I know nothing about the subject having never seen one before. I'm excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really liked the jazz that we listened to in class. I can't remember what day it was but the more modern stuff that had a 5 in the name. I enjoy jazz but the only exposure I've had to it is in hip hop or John Legend, so this was all new to me. It's very catchy and easy to listen to and I could listen to it for a whole cd. Especially what we listened to in class because it was constantly changing rhythm and instruments, it was great.
Regan McComb p.6
I think the activity that we did in class where we listened to two samples of music and drew an abstract drawing of what we heard was really helpful. It was easier to pay attention and really made us actually listen to the music samples. I enjoyed the faster sample of music because the other one was too repetitive and was kind of boring. The drawing really helped because once it was over you could look at it and see what kept coming up in the song and what the importance of it was.
Andrew Pilgrim Period 4
The music we listened to in class was much different than the music I generally listen to. The jazz ensembles tend to put together much longer songs that have the melodic motif throughout the song that carry it together. Jazz and classic rock share a lot of similar qualities in that they both tend to have longer songs that are even longer when played live. The jazz idea of each instrument having its own solo for as long as the musician plays it is an idea that has carried into modern music. In classic rock, bands like the Allman Brothers would take very long solos in this style at their concerts and the Doors were another jazz influenced band (not in style but in performance terms). The jazz we listened to in class was very interesting in the way it was able to change tempo, rhythm, and even key and still tie back into that motif of medoly that was in the initial part of the song.

This past week was very fun reading the play, and especially reading the zillion lines i had to read as the part of the fairy queen lady. anyways, the music that we listend to in class was very upbeat and fun. although i do agree with some other bloggers, i do think it was a bit repetitive at times, i am very interested as to how the director is going to modernize it and put it into a dance scene.

I liked the two music samples we listened to in class, they were unlike anything we had heard before and were by far my favorite. Drawing while listening to the music was really helpful and made it much easier to stay focused on the music and not drift off. Going on a trip to tour the Seattle Opera House was very worthwhile. Seeing the sheer immensity and order of the place utterly amazed me. Backstage left by itself had my attention roving every which way, trying to soak in exactly how big the place was. As a rough idea of how huge a room it was, I remember thinking to myself that two or three WHS stages would’ve fit comfortably inside the space. Standing right beside the mainstage proscenium was a similar sort of experience, looking out over the ocean of blue-green seats. I couldn’t help but marvel at the numbers of people that could fit there. We were told that it was something like over 2500 people could be seated for any one performance. Twenty-five hundred! At once! Ridiculous!

The music that we listened to in class was very intertaining. I liked the second piece that we listened to more, just because it sounded more farmiliar to me. The jazz in the second piece seemed to flow really well and all of the transitions between insturments were smooth. When I drew my picture I tried to make a design without any sharp edges that flowed so that it would reflect the music. I am really exited to see how they will dance to this music at the opera.

The music we listen to into class was interesting, I really don’t know how else to say it but I didn’t get it. Most music I listen to I can stay with it and understand it but with this music I found that the more I tried to listen to it the more I would drift away. I would come back when the music changed a little but then I would drift away again. Maybe that’s what the music is supposed to do to you, I doubt it, but in the end it from what I though it was smooth but not in the smooth since but overall not really for me.

The field trip to the Opera House was a really fun experience. Furthermore, to have Seneca as our tour guide was pretty interesting perspective to the tour. The part i liked most about the tour was meeting the props guy who showed us some of the common props used on stage. It was cool to see because sometimes to accomplish what needs to be done in the script some interesting illusions are needed to be performed. Although that was my favorite part i liked a lot of other things about the tour too. I particularly liked hearing Seneca describe the sculpture in the entrance as well as the rooms for people who donate money to the opera. The backstage of the opera house is massive and i really had no clue there was that much space back there. Lastly, what i found interesting was learning about the history of the opera house and its acoustics.

I am your spaniel. And Demetrius, the more you beat me, I will fawn on you. Use me - but as your spaniel. Spurn me, strike me, neglect me, lose me, but give me leave, unworthy as I am, to follow you.
-Helena
This is the part in the Act II when Helena is once again throwing herself at Demetrius. She has led him into the forest so they can find Lysander and Hermia. She is continuing to pursue Demetrius despite his obvious desire to have Hermia, and not Helena so Helena basically says she rather be treated horribly by Demetrius then not have him at all, and seemingly that she would take some pleasure in it, just as long as she is with him. Shakespeare's weak female characters have always bothered me, but for the amount of weak female character's he has strong one's to counter-act (my favorite Shakespearean character will always be Lady Macbeth for this reason). But even the head strong Hermia, who is denying her father is still at the will of another man.

When we went to the opera house I was expecting the run of the mill type tour. As we split up into our groups and went on our way it began to get more interesting. They were honest about more money meaning more opportunity which I thought was admirable. Going back stage and seeing the amount of space that they had was incredible. The opportunities that the space can handle really prompted me to look into seeing The Ring. Throughout all the stops we took while going through the opera house it all was incredible. When I really noticed how much goes into making an opera it amazes me and I respect it a lot more than before. I knew about all of this before I went but seeing it all at once really put it into perspective. I think that next year you should make it a requirement to go on the tour.
Bergen Anderson per. 2
The tour of the opera house was an exciting experience. First of all I had no idea how big everything was and how much space there was behind the scenes. I loved going into the dressing rooms and learning about the costumes and costume designers because that is a profession I would love to have. My absolute favorite part was a demonstration by the props master. It was when he mixed bee pollen, oxygen and an open flame to make a small explosion. It showed the technical and science side of the props which I found interesting. I was really glad I was able to attend.
The tour of the opera house was intriguing, and even though it revealed a lot of the backstage workings, it still leaves a sense of magic on stage when an opera is beign performed. We learned about the huge elevator for sets, and the room adjacent to the stage that can hold set changes, as well as over 100 pulleys and rope to the side of the stage for wall and sets too. It helps one appreciate the opera more, not just the sheer magnitude and beauty of the human voice, but all the technical, as well as monetary, talent that goes into each and every performance.

Listening to those two different types of music was fun. I enjoyed being able to draw along with them, and see how people drawing were different and the same in ways. For the first song it felt more abstract, and repetitive, but i liked that. The second song had more energy, and kept me more interested then the first song. Overall i liked this activity, and it was able to keep me interested the whole time.
I liked the music we listened to in class. Drawing the music how we interpreted it was my favorite assignment we've done so far. The jazz song we listened to first had one groove they kept going back to and let each musician wank their instruments for 10 minutes, and the second had a lot of variety to it.

Quote from Midsummer Night's Dream:
If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended:
That you have but slumbered here,
While these visions did appear;
And this weak and idle theme,
No more yielding but a dream,
Gentles, do not reprehend.
If you pardon, we will mend.
My Interpretation:
This quotation is from the character Puck, near the end of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It's directed toward the audience, seeming to question the reality of the audience's experience. This quote is important because it deals with the theme of dreams beyond the world of the play.

I thought that the music we listened to in class was actually very interesting. I especially liked the fact that par tof the music improvised. How musicians can just come up with all of that and make it sound good, to me, seems like it would take a lot of skill. After listening to it, I never would have thought that it was called jazz. The jazz that I thought was jazz was trumpets and what our jazz band plays in school. Definetly not what we listened to in class.

I enjoy the music we listen to in class to prepare for the ballet. I am very anxious to see how the ballet will be. When i thought of us going to a ballet i thought more classical soft music but this is very upbeat music and the dancers are going to need quick feet. I assume it will be different than any other ballet than i would imagine. It also keeps me very focused and interested when we do activities like the drawing while listening, it really helps me listen to what is happening in the music and the changes in the music. This music is very jazzy and will make for an interesting and different ballet.

Ay me, for aught that I could ever read,
Could ever hear by tale or history,
The course of true love never did run smooth...
This quote, spoken by Lysander, is important because it talks about the difficulties that lover’s face, which is one of the significant themes in the play. Lysander says this to calm Hermia when her father is forbidding them to get married. What it means is that lover’s will always face evils, and that problems like these are the price they have to pay for true love. If their love is real and they don’t give up on it, they will have each other in the end and live happily ever after.

Listening to "Take Five" in class was an activity that I really enjoyed. While we listened to the music I was able to focus deeply on abstract thought instead of hearing the repetitiveness of the instrumentals and the main "chorus" of the song. I also enjoyed the activity in which we were instructed to "draw" our visual interpretation of the music and it helped me to picture how the dance could have been performed at different portions of the song and create a new perspective regarding a colorful song.

The music we listened to in class along with the drawing activities was a nice way to phase out from the art history project, and it has also made me more excited to see the ballet. As we discussed in class, I think that it would be interesting to omit the title of the piece of music until after we are through drawing our ideas of the images and concepts. When we were asked to imagine how the dances will be choreographed it also helped me visualize the patterns in the music. It will be interesting to see how my ideas match up in comparison to the ballet.

I really enjoyed listening to the music this past week and watching the movie. I love going to see ballets, but i have never seen one that was so modern and had such upbeat music like this one will. I am very excited and interested to see how the director and choreographer will pull this off and make it look. I know that this ballet can go both ways and either be great, or have it be kinda weird and different, but from the music and what we have read and seen i am really really looking forward to the ballet and in my head i imagine it being really good so i hope that it is.

My favorite part about the Seattle Opera House Tour was getting to see a professional stage up close. Being that I’m very involved in theater, it was great to explore another side of a passion of mine. One of my favorite parts of the tour was getting to see stage left. Stage left was bigger than the Woodinville High School Theater times two. I liked being able to see where they stored sets for shows like The Ring during their production. I also thought it was interesting how many truck loads an average set would take in comparison to that of the Ring’s. Normal sets fill about two or three semis, whereas the ring will use about 40 semis. And finally the best part of our Seattle Opera House Tour was our tour guide Steven because he looked exactly like Schindler.

the music from class seemed to tell a lot about the opera that we are going to see. drawing the pictures while listening to it showed that the music does have a theme to it and that the dancers will be telling a story in a similiar way while they dance. it was gorgeous music and i am looking forward to the ballet to see how they tell the story in a visual way.

And so far am I glad it so did sort

Robbin Goodfellow or puck as most call him, is my most favorite character out of Shakespeare's works. He enjoys most confusion and trickery, although he has shown he knows of lovers and their behaviors as well. He is the child that slips through your fingers and takes you at your word. at this point in the play, puck is acknowledging that he has messed up, but confesses his enjoyment.

I real enjoyed the tour of the opera house on Wednesday. I knew there was a lot going on behind the scenes but I didn't know hoe much. It seemed crazy how many things had to be perfect to give a food performance. Also I did not know that there was some one typing out he translations and queing them at the exact moment. And he said they needed to do this a few thousand times a night. Then what amazed me was that the person who plays the giant drums is the highest paid musician besides the head violinist. And if they miss one beat it ruins the whole count. Over all I liked the trip because it showed me all of the behind the scene tech jobs that are interesting. Also now I know what the whole house looks like, not just the place where we sit and watch.

"If then true lovers have ever been crossed,
It stands as an edict in destiny.
Then let us teach our trial patience,
Because it is a customary cross,
As due to love as thoughts and dreams and sighs,
Wishes and tears, poor fancy's followers."
This quote by Hermia occurs when her and Lysander mourn over their unaccepted love. Hermia's dad won't allow their marriage, dooming her to either execution or nunnery for life. In the quote, Hermia says that true love must always face obstacles. They must be patient and work through their problems.
This is an important decision in the play. After this is when they decide to run away together to be wed outside of Athenian boundaries. Her quote sets the stage for the action to come in the near future, on their quest through the forest.

"O, hell! to choose love by another’s eye."
THis quote is refering to the fact that Hermia is being given to Demitreus in merrage even though she loves Lysander. this is the whole context of the play. Hermia and Lysander are in love and decide that if they cannot be merried, they will run away. Hermia says this quote to her father when he refuses to allow her to marry Lysander.

I was gone the first day we listened to the music but the second day was great!!! I loved the music. With it being filled with different types and beats of music i can already tell that the ballet will be very interesting. Also watching the movie really gave me a better idea about what this ballet will be like. It is gonna be very fun!!! I cant wait to see it as a ballet.

The music we listened to in class was as beautiful as it was diverse. Each had some different element, some different flair, some different style that was its very own, and that none of the other songs shared. I loved the activity that we did with the music, as it gave me a chance to see how my subconscious interpreted each of the songs differently, and gave me a visual representation of that.
